The first step in the student’s guide to research is to determine the problem and define the question to answer. In other words, the first thing a researcher must do is to choose a current issue from which they can create a developed question that will lead to finding research which will help them answer their question. The problem with the drug industry, however, is that they have been known to let sources of bias affect their findings. For example, there have been companies who will bribe researchers so they will claim their drug is the best when in actuality it is not. This is extremely alarming considering how the people look to drug industries for advice on which medicines they should be taking in order to improve their health and extend their lives. Even major journals give in to temptation as they publish articles funded by those who want their product to be consumed even if it results in medical emergencies such as a heart attack. Clearly while it is true that drug industries seek to promote world health, they are also in the business for their own profit which can lead to serious circumstances.
As a consumer I also have a personal bias on the drug industry’s influence over research in the sense that I constantly push them to come out with new, more impressive drugs that will cure anything I am suffering from. This is true whether the consumer is dealing with cancer or the common cold for we all wish to be able to live without getting sick which is unrealistic and is not right of us to depend on the drug industry to complete such an impossible task. This is precisely why those in charge of the drug industries feel so overwhelmed and pressured to come up with a drug to please the consumers. In the end, there needs to be more open and honest communication between the public and the drug industries so that all parties are made aware of what the other is expecting as well as the extent of their abilities so that there is no more misunderstanding or outrageous demands. Thus it is important for consumers like me to realize how many of our assumptions concerning the drug industries need to be corrected.
