Introduction
The evolution of architecture is truly one of the most intriguing things about this particular discipline of art. The term ‘evolve’ when applied to the discipline of architecture simply means that architecture usually changes over time and these changes can be traced through different time periods and generations by analyzing differences in architectural styles.
Originally, the purpose of architecture was to actually lessen the general risks on humanity that were brought by nature. The purpose of architecture was to protect humanity from elements such as heat, cold, storms and even wild predators (Friedman 2010).
However, over time, this trend changed and architecture began to acquire a new purpose and function. Essentially, architecture became a means of representation, communication and facilitation of cultural identity rather than being just a protective means or device for human beings. To achieve this new purpose or function, architecture has been forced to undergo massive rebranding
Architecture has evolved from Ancient Greek to Roman architecture to the modern architecture that is present in the world today. One of biggest factors that have contributed to the evolution of architecture in modern times has been technology.
Technology has played a very paramount role in helping to change the purpose and function of architecture over time. In fact in some experts define architecture as a celebration of technology. In the olden days when it came to architecture, there was an emphasis on human craftsmanship and historical styles. However, these aspects have been passed over by time (Friedman 2010).
Currently, architectural designs are being formulated digitally through the use of computers (Friedman 2010). Human craftsmanship is becoming irrelevant more and more as days progress. There are pros and cons to be drawn from this particular issue but this is story for another day.
With all these factors, in my mind it is clear to see that the future of architecture is very unpredictable. However, if the modern architectural trend is anything to go by, then only greater things can be expected from this interesting field of art.
