1. How would you characterize the leadership of Howard Schulz?
It seems to me that Howard Schulz is a real business leader – not only he managed to use his innate leadership skills, drive and creativity to start a company, but he also had enough courage to acknowledge his mistakes and gain managerial experience out of them to run the company and lead it to success. What is really valuable about this manager is that now he understands the price of company’s growth and that company’s success and winning can be very fleeting and elusive. As a result, he cares more for Starbuck’s than he used to – he is not business-impulsive anymore.
2. What traits or skill does he demonstrate?
Mr. Schulz demonstrated his strong personality when he did not give up his company, instead he had to change his business perception and the way he organized the company – a person who is able to change such quintessential views really deserves respect. Besides, Howard Schulz can be characterized as a very hard-working, disciplined, flexible and goal-oriented person.
3. How has this changed or adapted as the company has faced multiple challenges?
Howard Schulz confesses that he used to misread the economy until he faced serious problems for this reason. Thus, he became a better listener, at the same time more disciplined. One more his achievement was that he finally stopped being too self-centered manager and started delegating tasks and building a team instead of the centralized management. Mr. Schulz realized that he was not always right and it is worth listening to experts first and, of course, analyzing the innovation before its introduction. Starbuck’s employees characterize Mr. Schulz as ‘humble’ nowadays.
