Being at a new school is so exciting. First, the freedom of being away from parents is quite intoxicating. The sound of the latest dance hits on campus puts a special rhythm in everyone’s steps. Groups of friends are dancing or just having fun. This offers a little glimpse into how great the parties will be in the upcoming evening. The social scene and smell of fried chicken from the student lounge solidify one fact. Working hard in high school in order to get acceptance letters from a great college was worth all the trouble. However, just like a thunder storm often follows a sunny forecast, there are some inevitable problems to which all freshman students must adjust. One day, a lesson was learned that didn’t come in the form of a lecture. I didn’t know anyone. Secondly, I could never seem to get access to the classes I wanted. Worst of all, everywhere I went there was an extremely long line of students ahead of me.
I spent eight hours on a beautiful college campus and I didn’t get everything done. Nothing reminds me of how lonely I am more than seeing a cluster of friends laughing or a loving couple holding hands while they walk. It is impossible to take 5 steps without seeing this everywhere. I didn’t have any new friends and no one stopped to notice that I was lost on the vast school grounds. Where was the registration office? How do I get to the bookstore? Being too shy to approach anyone was crippling. It was hard to know what to say in order to sound cool. I didn’t know if the latest slang term was, “Hey dude” or simply, “What’s up?” The college book store had maps of the whole university but I was embarrassed to be seen walking around with it. I would look lost. The key was to always look like I knew how to handle myself. Due to being extremely bashful, I didn’t meet any of the other students. It was tough being in a new place while not having any friends.
Nothing could have prepared me for the heartache I experienced after learning that none of my selected classes were available. The freshman orientation meeting didn’t warn us about wait times being three hours long! I had to go to the dean in the English and math departments and wait a long time. Both buildings were a world apart from one another. The lunch line made me skip eating in the cafeteria. I went to the student lounge to wait for delicious fried chicken only to find out that they ran out of chicken wings. I went to get the books I needed for my two 8:00 am courses. The line for entering the book store was wrapped around the outside hallway. The rain was unrelenting. The long line to pay for my heavy books sent me over the edge of insanity.
While waiting to buy my books, I started a conversation with a freshman student who had the same rough day that I had. She introduced me to some of her new friends and we all walked through campus as a group. We arrived at the dorms and found that we are across the hall from one another. All of us had to be in class by 8:00 Monday morning. I suddenly had new friends. The dorm director showed me how to register for my last class through the school website to avoid the lines. It was a nice day after all. There was a line to get into the party that evening, but I wasn’t alone and it was worth the wait.
