Introduction
The book Anne Hutchinson: Puritan Prophet written by Timothy D. hall describes the story of a woman who as to the author, the woman is presented as strong and willed. Her intellectualism and faith brought about the role she played in the life of Puritan in the early New England. Hall in the book tries to bring about clarity to this powerful historic event of Hutchinson by answering several questions throughout the book. The stronger argument that Hall places on the table is the quest for anything remarkable that it can be placed for the tragic fate of Anne Hutchinson.
Hall presents the historic fate of Hutchinson in a chronological order of events having a wider variety of sources, ranging from first hand information from people who existed though times of Hutchinson to the historians of today. The historical sources of Hall are stronger than the firsthand from people who lived during Anne’s time in that they are based on recorded information unlike for the firsthand which is based on memories. Memories are not reliable as at times important information or occurrence cannot be clearly remembered. In the first chapter of the book, Hall provides historians based information about Anne’s life and her overall background information. Hall uses Puritan minister’s statement about Hutchinson as one of his sources. The minister refers Hutchinson as a modern Jezebel who insinuated women with abominable and perverse ideas concerning women rights and dignity. Hall sources of information about Hutchinson are weaker on the grounds that he used all second hand information which at times is more fantasized.
In the early years of Anne experience women were considered as housekeepers and were barred from accessing education materials. Anne being a daughter of Puritan minister, she has been against the authorities of Puritan. However, being the minister’s daughter, Anne unlike other women had the opportunity to access all the books in her father’s library. This experience makes her have an agonizing feeling that women are not given the opportunity to build and decide their fortune. Anne’s fair acts and argument on the rights of women facilitates her spreading religious views as everything she argued as unfair got its basis from Christianity values. Anne’s disagreement with the teachings of the church makes, as it is evident from her speaking on the corruption of the church leads her into trail for several reasons. First Anne was addressed as a woman with no husband. This was considered as disregard of God’s will. Secondly Anne’s teaching attracted many people (Hall, 2010).
In Hutchinson’s life when she was at Massachusetts, show had collected a large number of people who shared the same opinion, which was greater by the other points held. In accordance to the Ellsberg (1997), the most recognized clergy were referred to the jezebel as an abominable woman. She had obtained some reasonable protection from the legal body enhanced by Sir Henry vane; he was renowned as the governor. Several factors enhanced the behavior depicted some social authority (Hall, 2010).
As depicted by the meetings held, Hutchinson was always divisive. Most of her supporters involved people with significant faction in the colony. For example ministerial synod of the examined cotton which investigate Hutchinson and wheelwright. In this instance Hutchinson showed radical spirituality which was an extreme condition. In most circumstances Hutchinson’s’ meeting conveyed the “unauthorized” meetings and gathering that bred defection from the faith. Hutchinson claimed the freedom which confused. She was an abominate woman, the modern ‘jezebel’. She was influencing the way people behaved by suggesting abominable ideas that infringes their belief. Anne paid a close attention when she cited the bible which should be kept silent. Her subverts views put her into trouble and she was put on trial in 1637, and she was brought in a panel of men. She was cross-examined to admit her role in blasphemies (Hall, 2010).
In the integration she was accused of causing chaos and conflict among the people. She was accused of breaking the fifth commandment in the bible,’ honor thy father and mother”. In this particular scenario she was taking the attention of women who later failed to meet their family’s expectations. All this interpreted illustrate the scenario of confusion in the worship. The bay face relates to the various interpretations. She was essentially strong; she was a strong person since she refused to cooperate with them. Ann was held ultimate person responsible the waywardness. She ended up being delayed. Ann Hutchinson showed prove as a woman who has fond of him. Her role in the ship remains crucial since she proved herself right. The gender biased society was in trouble as she stood firm on her ground. She proved right by going all through in search for institutions that concerns the women (Hall, 2010). Her religious ideologies were influential. She traveled all over in an attempt to explore new ideas that would evade the strictness of exchanging ideas Hutchinson hand went against the claim that will show the ideologies that are devoid of rigid structures.
