Contesting for a political position in the United States has become an increasingly costly affair for aspiring candidates. The need to attract voters through lavishly staged campaigns has led to the heightening of the amounts of money that individuals can contribute to their preferred candidates. This article explains the impact of the Supreme Court’s decision to abolish limits imposed on the election spending. The Court’s ruling was issued towards the beginning of the campaign period, and would most probably intensify the pivotal role that campaign funds plays in American politics. The decision seemed to change the Finance Law in trivial but significant ways. Whereas the amount of individual contribution was significantly increased, contributions by corporations and unions remained unchanged. The general effect of the ruling was an increase in campaign money. As a result, the money supply within the economy expanded during the campaign duration.
The Court’s decision has both pros and cons. It upholds individual liberty whereby a person is now free to provide less a constrained amount of financial support for his or her preferred candidate. In addition, political participation is greatly enhanced. By increasing the amount of contribution that citizens can offer to their candidates of choice, individuals exercise more political power. However, the Court’s ruling has monetized the advent of political rights and freedom. The true spirit of democracy requires that people should be in a position to vote for candidates of their choice without the need for monetary enticements. The decision may allow some candidates to woo voters through the extravagance of their campaigns rather than through ideological contests.
In conclusion, while the Court’s decision is a boost for political candidates, there exists the threat of excessive spending of campaign money which may affect economic stability. The American economy risks suffering from economic shocks due to unanticipated money supply. This may provoke rise in domestic price levels thus inflation. Whilst the decision by the Court is an important landmark ruling, monetary and fiscal authorities need to rapidly monitor its impact on the general economy.
