Abstract:
Gun violence in the U.S. is out of control. Incidents in US of gun violence in 2012 were horrible, widely publicized, and unprecedented. We will look at how to prevent such incidents in the future in the rest of the paper.
Paragraph 1:
Importance of gun laws in U.S. Politics. NRA’s stance on the matter (de-regulation). Recent successes: Concealed Carry in many states. The reaction from the other side on recent acts of gun violence in 2012 to restrict gun laws.
Paragraph 2:
History of gun ownership in the United States and why people feel they have a right to them. Examination of the Second Amendment and what it actually grants. Context within Manifest Destiny. Comparison with other countries, like Great Britain.
Paragraph 3:
Recreational gun use in America and its acceptance. People believing that restrictions on assault rifles will take away their ability to hunt, promoted by the NRA. Examples of how congressmen in certain districts, despite party and actual beliefs, cater to their electorate on the issue.
Two incidents of gun violence in Wisconsin in 2012: the Sikh Temple Shooting and the Salon Shooting in Brookfield. Neither shooter should have had access to guns, the Sikh Temple Shooter because he was a known White Supremacist, and the Salon Shooter because he had a restraining order against him because of his wife, who he shot along with others. Both were able to purchase their guns legally and killed many.
Paragraph 6:
It was too easy for both of these men to obtain a weapon legitimately, given what was known of their mental states.
Paragraph 7:
Context. These incidents we looked at closely were only two of many in the United States in 2012; the only thing they have in common is geography and that they were wrong. Elaboration on Aurora shooting, as well as Sandy Hook Elementary. Placing them into context.
Paragraph 8:
What can be done? Stricter laws to ensure these people are not able to purchase weapons, mainly from private dealers. Increase measures on private sales, and make them subject to background checks. Place liability for sellers who avoid the measures partially on them. Make stricter laws for gun purchases by members of known hate groups.
Paragraph 9:
Conclusion. Many spree-killer shootings in 2012. NRA galvanized to fight; Americans concerned. It is time for action.
