Question 1
The video illustrates transition as a type of challenge indicating that in the transition stage, the concept of ethos is codified into creed meaning that military officers may face a major challenge in trying to comprehend what to expect in a new environment. U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (2016) argues that although transition helps in creating a higher level of possibility in ensuring that military officers engage in environmental changes, it may also lead to a situation where some of these officers are unwilling to accept the impending changes. In terms of personal knowing, I understand that some of the environments in which these military officers may not be favorable. Thus, this leads to a situation where some of these officers develop some form of negativity in trying to comprehend or gain command within the new environments, which highlights the challenges that they experience during transition.
The video also indicates that the transition stage incorporate different aspects of the military culture that include service creeds, core values, and oath of office all of which the military officers must be willing to engage as part of their position. Most of these officers find themselves in new environments governed by the service creeds or oath of office, which defines their behaviors within given environments. In terms of ethical knowing, these officers find themselves embracing the changes in their environments through their capacity to abide by laid out policies and procedures. However, the transition phase creates some form of challenge for the officers, as some of them lack the intended capacity that would help them understand how to make effective decisions when faced with a wide array of environments or situations. Although the video does not dwell on this particular phase, it indicates some of the expected challenges for military officers intending to engage within their professional capacities.
Question 2
The concept of LANDNAV focuses more on the orientation of military officers to a new environment or unfamiliar terrain through effective navigation as a way of gaining that basic understanding of the terrain (Hoge, 2010). When navigating through the new terrain, the military officers often focus on moving on foot, as this is the best method that would allow them to gain a basic understanding of the terrain. However, this also exposes them to increased issues that affect their overall wellbeing as military officers. One of the key challenges arising from this particular situation is that these officers do not have any understanding of the risks or hazards that they would be exposed to when navigating a new terrain. Ultimately, this leads to a situation where some of these officers find themselves exposed to a wide array of medical issues some of which researchers would understand depending on the terrain in question.
Although the military officers often go for training on effective LANDNAV, the training offered does not provide them with information on what to expect when moving into a new terrain especially on issues such as diseases. In some cases, some of these officers involved in LANDNAV find themselves in the middle of crossfires with their enemies, thus, exposing them to increased psychological distortions (Hoge, 2010). In such cases, the officers are most likely to suffer from PTSD, which is a condition arising from exposure to a violent environment causing mental distortion. In terms of empiric knowing, one of the key solutions to this problem is the use of technology that may include satellite imaging among others to engage in LANDNAV. Utilization of technology would mean that the engagement of the military officers in the LANDNAV process is somewhat limited, which limits their exposure to medical issues.
