1. Benjamin is amused by the fact that the collector builds a lot of amusement through creating a link and a storyline by linking generations or history. This means that the collector aims at re-modeling or reflecting a certain object so as to provoke a memory among people such that there is a connection. Through provoking one’s memory or history, people form a bond or a link between things such that an image represents an idea or something of substance. Benjamin explains that there are three types of memories that can be evoked: intentional memory, voluntary memory and involuntary memory (Leslie 68). The collector is said to invoke the involuntary memory that links one’s childhood experience to memories seen in action. This shows that the collector helps one to remember one’s history or past involuntarily thereby, forming a connection to the object or image. Benjamin comes to a conclusion that the act of collecting is a “form of practical remembering (Leslie 70)”
Flaneur is the act of one forming a bond with nature or an image by linking it to one’s past. Benjamin believes that Flaneur is a “collector’s tactical” into invoking memory or ones history (Leslie 78). This is significant to the collector as it aids in forming a link between the present and one’s past through the use of an object.
2. According to Leslie the act of being tactical and optical is important to help one see things a new. The tactical of space can be linked to memories of one’s childhood experience, where one’s curiosity invoked the five common senses especially touch. Through feeling an object, one made a connection to the object in that one involuntarily studies the object closely so as to understand its purpose. Benjamin uses the art of photography or filming as a key example to demonstrating the idea of close-up so as to establish a connection between the picture and the audience. As a result, this shapes the idea of memory in that a link between an object and one’s history is established through the art of being tactical and optical. This means that through touch and looking closely come hand in hand into forming a new idea or a recollection of one’s memory.
3. Leslie writes “Surrealists focused on everyday so as to rediscover the eccentricity of humdrum (72).” This illustrates that Surrealists aimed at using their everyday activities to write poems that would make the audience link the present to their childhood or past memories. Like Surrealists, Benjamin aimed at evoking the present storyline such that it matches with something from the past that many people can relate to.
4. Optimal unconscious comprises of touching with the aim of looking at an object closely. Benjamin uses the example of ring that in most cases, people have to touch it so as to view it. Through this the act of optimal unconsciousness is drawn. In this example the ring can be termed as ‘conscious’ whereas the person studying the ring closely can be termed as the ‘optical unconscious’ in that they can interpret the ring in whatever way they want. This act is also used in the film industry where objects are manipulated so and images put in close up mode so as to invoke a relationship. This draws the audience into the film or a portrait as it invokes certain emotions or relates to one’s history.
