The vertical dimension is what predominates in Bae Bien – U’s “Gyeongju” photography. While the focus is on capturing the idea of high and the impressive stature of the trees, the painting exposes the greatness of the nature in its full element, far away from human presence. As we look more attentively to the trees, there is created the idea of linkage between earth and a superior space. The trees are the vivid elements that create a connection between the visible, touchable space and the untouchable, unknown one, better said the space towards we tend.
Symbolically speaking, this is an expression of the ideal, explored in black and white and gray scale hues. The photography focuses on long, tall lines, combining the verticality with perpendicularity for exploring the entire space between the earth and the above.
The trees shapes are not perfect: while some of them are straight, others are curved, even arched. They seem to overlap, combine their shapes and lines. Although the general setting reflected is gloomy and at the first look might seem desolating, a more attentive analysis explores new meanings: the setting is the perfect background of a dancing ball, where trees from all the wood has dressed nicely, wearing their leaves crowns, and are waltzing towards one another with grace and mastery, as only the pure nature can perform.
The photography is separated into two corners: a darker one and a brighter, shiny one. This indicates a moment of the day, wherein the night intertwines with the dawn, or the twilight with the aurora. This creates a balanced asymmetry that configures unity to the photography.
Somewhere in the right upper corner, in the shiny side of the photography, is formed a cluster of trees, which bend together to welcome the sun. The different shades of grey indicate a foggy atmosphere, where the light is obscure, complementing and surprising the idea of the mystery, the unknown of the nature. The pattern is repetitive, yet integrated, as the vertical elements that form the composition create the impression of uniqueness, individuality brought together to form a community.
Another focus stays at the basis of Guo Fengyi’s “Ear”. The artist drown various forms and lines, and circles, combined the geometric elements with abstract view, to create what it may be a human ear. The painting elaborates on the verticality and horizontality of the space, as the main shape presented is an oval, which includes an internal organism, and possesses external features that move into a horizontal direction.
It is very interesting how the artist has used brushes and the combinations of lines for creating the linear texture. All the lines that are going up, and left and right, and down indicate the directions that the ear explores.
The internal organism included in the vertical oval seems to have a personality and an individuality of its own. In fact, the painter might have used the personification the ear, illustrating it as an alien body, which has eyes, and a peculiar shape. The representation of the eyes within the ear holds symbolical meanings, indicating a communion between two senses: hearing and seeing. The symbolically represented creature seems to also have hair, which is represented through the external curled lines, which delimitate the oval.
Another point that drowns the eye is at the basis of the painting, where the artist has created two whirlpools, out of which one seems to have been erased. This creates an intriguing element, which challenges the unity of the composition.
The composition is abstract, the lines and circles join together for creating volume and content, while the colors express various functions of the ear apparatus. There are various shades of mixed colors that come together in a dance of lines and circles for creating bizarre arched shapes. Each element presented is based on a whirlpool, which evolves and transforms into new forms.
The composition has a certain dynamism, and although the elements included have various shapes and colors, the full painting is integrated, presenting an unitary expressivity. The artist included detailed elements, such as the green phylum, which represents a flower like drawing, which counter the internal walls of the oval and transcends the walls, ending in some curled lines.
The painting is circular, having one distinguishable element, which sets a differentiation tone from the rest of the painting: the red elements, which flow vertically from the top of the painting have a correlation with the Chinese culture and ideology. In fact, the entire painting, with all the complexity of lines, circles, geometric shapes, abstract construction has a particularity of its own, inherited from the Chinese art and tradition.
The painting, drawn in light and happy colors of blue, green or orange has a unique style, exploring through its volume the dimensions of sensitivity. The painting seems to have been drawn with colored pencils, which makes it childish like, naïve painting. However, the texture, and the integrated pattern and composition indicate the maturity of the artist, its creative force and the abstract mind, combined with a thorough knowledge and understanding of the Chinese culture.
