The article, “GIS Solutions for Environmental Management” was very informative. I learned many things about the program itself, as well as the services it offers. The article also taught me about ESRI GIS products, along with how professionals use them to manage the environment. The article also explained environmental problems, and how GIS is used to help aid those problems. Overall, I found the article very stimulating and educational.
According the article, GIS stands for Geographic Information System. The technology that supports it is used to deliver information concerning the environment to the public, as well as environmental specialists. In non-technical language, GIS acts as an environmental intermediary, streamlining information to third parties. It offers location-based data; the data collected can be established by certain criteria, such as specific environmental issues, potential users of the technology, or environmental spheres. Specific data collections can concern vegetation and land-use type, air quality, urban development, jurisdiction boundaries, land features, population density, and hydrographic data. It gives users digital maps, allowing users to see compiled date more clearly. Users can see environmental changes or the environment’s features by dissecting layers of the inspected land. Each layer shows a different specified piece of data, including, but not limited to soil stability, migration corridors, and dust source points. GIS offers the data in an effort to keep users as informed as possible so that they may be a part of making a difference in the environment.
Part of GIS’s mission is creating ESRI GIS products. GIS tools are designed for functionality, in order to make scanning the environment and gathering information easier than ever before. Products are also designed to be user friendly and work together. ESRI’s Desktop GIS allows users to use a program called ArcReader. This ensures that anybody can print any map files published in the ESRI database. The maps all access the varieties of data reviewed in the previous paragraph, keeping professionals, and common users, aware of environmental changes. ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcReader are designed to allow professionals to access data, analyze, and graph it. ESRI also created Server GIS. Server GIS includes ArcSDe, which is a spatial data server, allowing users and professionals to store their own data findings. The findings can later be used in other programs. ArcIMS allows individuals to publish their own maps, complete with data. Other ESRI GIS products include the ArcGIS Engine allows developers to create their own mapping applications. ArcPad is a mobile application that provides mapping, GIS, and database access for professionals working in the field. They can access all of the information from their cellphones. ArcWeb offers the same capabilities as ArcPad, only over a computer’s internet connection. The ESRI GIS Portal Toolkit gives the individual all they would need to create their own data portal. Professionals in and out of the field may use all of these tools to share and save data in an effort to improve the environment.
GIS offers many forms of technology that look pleasing to professionals and individuals who are simply interested in the environment. However, GIS is more than just a cool device; it is making an effort to manage the environment. For example, GIS offers software extensions, which expand ArcGis’s potential for environmental management. ArcGIS 3d Analysis allows professionals to capture 3-D visualizations of areas, enabling them to see any potential damage done by erosion, natural disasters, or nearby factories and treatment facilities. ArcGIS Tracking Analysis allows for real-time tracking of chronological data taken from a specific area. This data can include past entries and account for future circumstances. The complications of the physical environment are becoming very real. Humans are a growing burden on the environment and GIS tools such as these can help us improve the condition of the world around us. With ArcGIS Tracking, for instance, all chronological data of natural disasters, as well as manmade erosion can be calculated by the system. The data of the effects can be shown and the program can calculate future damage. Professionals can use these estimations to evaluate how we, as humans, must change our behavior in order to ensure that the predicted outcome does not occur. GIS can also help us estimate the damage we have already done, by calculating things like soil stability, and air quality. We will be better aware of the areas that need care, as well as the areas that are more inhabitable.
The article taught me many things about GIS and its technology. At first glance, it appears very boring. However, after learning about all it can do I see that it is very interesting. GIS is a powerful tool used to help us learn about the environment. ESRI GIS tools allow us to communicate to one another with all of the information we collect. This enables us to stay informed, as well as share what we know. This sharing of information, as well as the ability to gather and save such information, allows us to project future environmental issues. We are able to correct our behavior and prevent these predictions, while saving already devastated areas of the environment thanks to GIS.
