It is important to note that there is some similarity in the way the two pieces of writings have been written. However, there is some contrast between the two. The similarity comes in the way that the concept in the two stories is the same. The two authors refer to the same thing, but with different ideas. For instance, the two authors give out the views or reasons as to why they write. The difference comes in the sense that even though they are referring to the same concept, one author has lifted some ideas from the other author. Didion borrowed some ideas from Orwell. For Orwell, the motivation to write is different from Didion, who got the motivation to write from Orwell.

An essay is more interesting to write because it is short, hence one can make the story more attractive than a novel. A novel requires a lot of time to write because of its size. Unlike an essay, one will need to combine many themes in order to come up with a novel.
