Analysis section
Sport is one of the means through which young people relax, interact and unwind after a busy day or week. It is also one of the hobbies that parents feel comfortable when their children engage in. Sports has been in the recent past considered as a career path as many young people go to sports colleges just to learn more tactics. However, behind this sporting activity are scenes that have continually eaten up its essence. This has mostly affected female athletes and sports personalities who have been branded a name that they do not necessarily deserve. Due to some of the activities, they engage in and the challenges they face on a daily basis, they have been considered gay and bisexual. Even though it is true that some section of female athletes are gay, this does not imply that every female athlete is gay. Most of the characters and behaviors observed in them have been associated with gay practices.
Most female athletes complain of being discriminated in important events and appointments because of the assumption that they are gay. The procedure that is used to gauge their sexual inclination is generalized yet they have no control over them. For instance, sports managers look at their interests and hobbies and whenever they find that such activities relate to what they consider gay, they are denied the opportunity (Boxill 235). Lady Coaches who are considered gay may never have an employment opportunity the moment they are suspected. They are considered to be a bad example to their juniors and likely to influence them into such activities. Their efforts to search for opportunities to exercise their career may be ruined permanently as the allegations spread like bush fire. It should be noted that some of them may not necessarily be gay but the fact that they have been associated with gay related activities, they are presumed to be so.
Reaction
Despite the fact that the government discourages any form of discriminations, female sports personalities continue suffering in silence with no one to hearken to their cry. The biggest challenge is when they are given other invalid reasons of why their request was denied, when in the real sense; they were discriminated against their suspected sexual orientation. Since it is not easy to determine a person’s sexual inclination by simply looking at them, they use some of the known features such as their dress code, position, body piercing and colors of their jewelry. The nature of their career requires sports personalities to behave masculine (Boxill 220). This is because of the exercises they have to engage in that are a little bit strenuous. This makes it quite hard for them to maintain an absolute feminine look. This does not however imply that they are gay; they are simply trying to balance between their careers and their responsibilities as women.
The female sports fraternity needs to come up to defend their members against such allegations. Whether the allegations are right or wrong, this should never be the basis under which they are selected for sports activities. I believe it is more about their sporting capabilities rather than what they sexually stand for that is more important. As long as they are not found guilty of coercing other sports women into gay activities, they should be given the freedom to exercise their career skills. It is rather unfortunate that career lives of some women who have invested a lot have to be cut short because of allegations that can neither be verified or directly affect what they do.
