I conducted an interview on the benefits and effects of EHRs in healthcare settings. I determined that the organization uses the CERNER EHR system in almost all its departments. This HIT is common to almost all healthcare organizations. CERNER offers a series of tools and features ideal for meeting federal regulations and daily workflows concerning patient health records. In essence, CERNER encompasses a scheduling dashboard that allows users to view information on appointments and their respective charts (Fairbanks, 2016). The concept map below offers a further outline of my interview with hospital staff on CERNER.
Pros for CERNER
Staff
Allows users to develop and run reports for ease in tracking practice performances.
The system’s interface is easy to use and allows users to compile reports with ease using available data.
CERNER has the ability of placing chart information into appropriate PHIs without the need for double entries.
It allows users to choose between a variety of interesting techniques such as quick-select and voice recognition (HealthIT, 2015).
Patient
Allows for easy collection, storage, and transfer of patient health information.
The ability to access PHI as well as trace historical records enhances health outcomes.
Cons of CERNER
Staff
CERNER uses the ASP as opposed to the popular SAAS model for off-site hosting.
Unlike SAAS, ASP does not allow for upgrades and enhanced customization (Fairbanks, 2016).
Like other EHRs, patient information privacy remains a major concern for CERNER.
Using CERNER places the organization at risk of confidentiality violation in the wake of unauthorized access (Menachemi & Collum, 2011).
Patient
Patient identity theft could occur following unmonitored access to sensitive and confidential records.
