This is a story of Barbara, a quiet, dull woman, and her daughter Sophie. It is also a testimony of life in England during and after World War II. The story, however, is not a description of the tragic side of the war. That story has already been depicted so many times in numerous novels. On the contrary, this story is about how the war affected the daily lives of those who stayed at home, who were initially terrified of its effects but eventually became fatalistically used to it later. More importantly, it is the story of two generations that do not seem to be able to understand each other, because maybe they have never really tried.
Sophie is the daughter of a famous photographer who died too young, but left in her a passion for photography and a legacy of several award-winning pictures. Even though Sophie is also a photographer, like her father, she has never held an exposition yet or receive an honor for her photography. Consequently, her focus is on the commercial side of photography rather than on its more artist elements. That is until she meets an art journalist who encourages her to look for her inner artist and maybe try to show her work. Eventually, Sophie comes up with a brilliant idea. She decides to organize an exhibit showing her father’s most acclaimed pictures, along with some of her own pieces.
This sudden interest in her father’s photography hits an unexpected wall: Barbara, Sophie’s mother, seems extremely reluctant to share her memories or allow Sophie go through the few belongings of her father that have survived in Barbara’s attic.
As the story develops and the novel approaches the ultimate resolution, it is clear that Sophie was mistaken on many aspects of her family and life. This mistakes include not only what she knew about her father, or even about her boyfriend, but especially and more interestingly about what she knew about her mother, Barbara, the photographer’s wife.
