Motivation is an imperative factor to make a person keep going. It is a vital factor that significantly contributes towards human development and growth. Motivation can be formed through rewards, which can be either extrinsic or intrinsic in nature (Pink n.d.). While extrinsic rewards are necessary; however, intrinsic rewards are more relevant in the 19th century. There are many theories related with motivation. I have selected Maslow’s hierarchy of Need to elucidate what drives me as I find this theory to be more practical and accurate to reflect my needs. This theory explains human being as having a set of distinct motivational structure, which is linked to their needs and wants (Steer et. al 381). The needs have been characterized in a hierarchical order with physiological needs at the base of the pyramid followed by Safety, Love/Belongingness, Esteem, and then Self-Actualization Needs.
In my wish list, I placed my desire to live a disease free life at the highest priority, which falls under the category of ‘Safety Needs’ in Maslow Hierarchy. My needs of safety are connected my wish of living a disease-free life, as I usually get afraid when I think of different diseases. Another most important need is to spend 50 years of marriage with my partner, have kids, to adopt a child and to have more dogs. These needs are attached to my feelings of being loved and to love. Like every other individual, I want to be loved and want to receive attention and appreciation. Being with my partner make me feel loved and secured and thus I want to keep it with me as long as I can.
Although according to Maslow’s hierarchy, first comes the psychological need, yet I put my safety and love needs first for the reason that at this point in time, my psychological needs are substantially satisfied. The above mentioned two needs are always at my superlative priority and they trigger my emotions of being an exceptional life partner and to value the biggest gift of Almighty i.e. Life. I also believe that these are the two most significant motivational drivers of my life that always give me courage and make me keep moving. In my opinion, during my employment period, health care benefits and flexible work opportunities would be the factors that will inspire and stimulate my performance as they tend to support me in mollifying these needs of mine.
Apart from these needs, I always want to take initiatives that enhance my self-esteem and respect and bring me appreciation. This falls into the category of Self-Esteem needs according to Maslow. I also wish to buy my own house, want to start a business, travel the world, buy a yacht, learn French and by an Island. These are defined as the self-actualization needs by Maslow’s theory. These are the luxuries that I want to have and tends to vary as per my realization potential.
