In chapter twelve of his book, Kaplan wrote about Burma, in which the Karen soldiers fight against the Burmese regimes that started in 1948. He described the Karen fighter and specified a Karen fighter named Saw Roe Key who was a victim of a land mine, was skeptical and thinking when the conflict between them and the Burmese regime will end as Cambodia will and Vietnam surpassed the same issue. We learned in this chapter that many Burmese ethnic groups have been fighting against the country’s military regime and they were being attack by scattering numerous land mines against these revolutionary groups. As I continued reading, I understand how some members of the SPDC, a Burmese junta, killed some members of the tribe along with rape cases against women within their tribe as Kaplan made an interview with a local clinic owner who treats wounded soldiers as well as the people who were uprooted from their homes. I may agree with the author’s argument as he was able to gather information from group of people who personally experienced this conflict. Additionally, it may have an impact towards the United States as there is an investment ban in Burma that started in 1997.
In chapter thirteen of this book, Kaplan claims that Indonesia, the world’s most populous Islam country and the fourth most populated globally, has changed its political and religious history as it surpassed the tremendous tsunami. As I read the chapter, I have learned that Indonesia portrays one of the many great proselytizing successes throughout Islam. I was able to understand that this success is remarkable as the Islam religion came to this country not in a way of military invasion just like it did the most, starting Iberia to Indian Continent, but from Aceh during the middle Ages via seaborne commerce of Indian Ocean. Kaplan’s argument is agreeable as Indonesia was able to attain the democracy without using violent forces unlike what former President Bush did over Iraq.
