CHRW operates in eight different segments which accomplish different tasks but all of them are focused towards realizing the general goal and objectives of CHRW.
The transportation segment is the largest segment. It contributes 85% of total revenue generated by the company (Datamonitor, 2000). The segment deals with all matters relating to movement of goods or customers from place to place. Close to this, is the sourcing segment whose main purpose is to look for external as well as internal funds that can be used to expand the company activities as well as financing its operations especially in logistics. It has to strive to increase the sales.
Payment Services segment deals with all matters relating to payments; handles all credit or debit related cases. It ensures that payment is made to stakeholders or collected from customers in good time so as not to compromise company activities.
The truck segment coordinates all activities performed by vehicles on land. It ensures that the vehicles bring a worthy income to the company and manage the facilities. Intermodal segment uses both rail and trucks to ship freight in containers or trailers. The segment is responsible for entering into marketing contracts and also arranges delivery through local motor carriers.
Ocean segment consolidates shipments, select ocean carriers, determine routing, contract for ocean shipments and also arranges for customs clearance of shipments. This segment makes a significant contribution to the total revenues of the company (Datamonitor, 2000). Air segment provides door-to-door service as a full-service aerial cargo forwarder. It mainly deals with international deliveries that are to be undertaken by means of air. Finally, there is the miscellaneous segment which handles all unexpected occurrences that may be detrimental to CHRW.
