The California Chamber of Commerce website is an information-laden site coordinated for businesses in California. Its subtitle as a ‘Human Resource Expert and Business Advocate’ completely describes its mission in fulfilling the needs of businesses looking to grow and successfully function within the California business realm. The home page has 4 sub headings in the tool bar, two of which are directed towards specific areas with a business regimen while the other two are offered for businesses to gain membership to the Chamber and physical educational tools to help navigate through California’s labor legal requirements.
The site offers legal advice regarding compliance with labor laws concerning employer – employee relations. There is a glossary that provides any and all employment terms that would be found in determining employee and employer interactions. Forms are provided that cover various legal aspects of what the employer is legally required to provide, as well as posters and pamphlets of employer – employee standards and requirements. There is a ‘labor law helpline’, as well as a chat line, with experts on California labor laws and the promise that the experts providing their advice will take as long as is necessary to answer the problems presented. There is an exhaustive array of topics the employer should cover from benefits, hours, a salary calculator, to in-house requirements such as bathrooms, complete with explanations and potential trouble spots.
I am most impressed with the lengths to which the organization goes to provide the foundation for employers. There are webinars, both on demand and live, that lead the employer through foundational areas like handbooks. Additionally, there is a complete list, with photos, of all state and local political Senators and Representatives that includes telephone numbers to contact these representatives. I would think that the most helpful aspect of the website is the plethora of information available for business owners and administrators, through the subdivisions under the various topics on the web page.
There are few if any features that could be added to what is presented to supplement what is already provided. Possibly videos or webinars of employers who have addressed various problems and obstacles, both successfully and not as successfully, could be afforded. Even though there are portions of the website that provide advice and information on how to recruit employees, the site is directed primarily to established businesses. It might be helpful if there was a part that targeted those who were beginning to start a business from the initial steps. This could include what is required in California to start a business from the ground floor.
All in all the California Chamber of Commerce website is productive and extremely helpful for businessmen. The site does an excellent job of providing news of all forms of legislation relating to employment and labor relations in any form. There are a few types of memberships offered all for a fee, which is well worth the potential information offered.
