Several weeks ago I had an experience to visit the Chicago's Adler Planetarium which is located in Chicago, Illinois, the US. The planetarium was built in 1930 by the architect Ernest Grunsfeld in the style of Art Deco. This visiting was a bright experience, because I had the possibility to get acquainted with one of the best planetariums of the United States, so those memories will never be forgotten. The first thing that has attracted my attention is the outward of the very Planetarium, because it looks like a big dome which resembles a planet. It is not a common thing when a planetarium looks like a space object, however, it is very symbolically.
There are various types of entertainment in the Planetarium, you can visit exhibits or shows. It provides visitors with eight different types of shows (one of them will be introduced on May 28, 2016), I decided to choose the one called “Earth, Moon & Son” (Adler Planetarium) and I have not regretted. The main character of the show, Coyote, a cartoon character, makes the performance amusing and quite childish, however, it explains characteristics of the Earth planet, its sattelite, the Moon, and the biggest star, the Sun. Coyote tells its visitors a lot of interesting peculiarities in relation to the abovementioned objects as well as some misconceptions (Adler Planetarium). What is more, I have liked that the cartoon character used a lot of humour and absurd statements in order to facilitate the understanding of the great variety of new information, especially concerning the relations between the Earth, the Moon, and the Sun.
Notwithstanding the fact that I have been studying astronomy for many years and I have deep knowledge in the subject, I managed to perceive some new facts about the universe. This childish show, I guess, should be the first step in congnition of the Chicago's Adler Planetarium, because the rest of the shows are based on the fact that their viewers are aware of the background information.
If to speak about the fact how the presentation could be improved, in my book, it would be better to include some deep information about the Earth, the Moon, and the Sun. Sure, this show has been created for an audience of children, the character Coyote makes the perception of information easy, so children, especially those who are 10 ages or more, will be able to understand even deeper and more complicated facts. After visiting of the Chicago's Adler Planetarium, I have had the idea of cheching all the possible dimensions of the discussed objects using existing data, formulas and knowledge of maths. Of course, I have no opportunity to do all the necessary measurements by myself, however, I can experience all those complicated calculations that have been made by astronomers before.
