I recorded my collaboration events over the course of approximately one and a half days and accumulated a total of 20 events. These collaborative events ranged from going to the gym, speaking on the phone, speaking in person with friends, relatives and strangers, and attending a party.
I am of a particular personality-type that prefers to be with people. I preferred to have a room-mate rather than live alone, for example, so I sought out a room-mate quite soon after moving to New York. However, sometimes being on my own (not collaborating at all) is the best way for me to work through a problem or figure out a more serious issue in my life.
The 20 events that I recorded indicate a ‘typical’ day in my life, both while at school and after school. One of the main things that I learnt when reflecting on the content of the events is that I may not collaborate as frequently as I had assumed I did. I am the kind of person who needs friends and enjoys talking and socializing. Humans on the whole are quite social animals and more often than not cannot live by themselves for long periods.
My recorded events reflect that I seek out collaboration based on my culture. New York city is very multicultural. I find it more multicultural than say, Los Angeles. There are even Chinese traditional herbal medicine practices here in New York. I am sure there are similar practices elsewhere but in my experience, they seem to be more prolific and well-established than other cities I have been too. These kinds of traditional cultural places are familiar to me and made me feel quite welcome and comfortable when I first came to New York, especially since I rely on Chinese medicine for a medical issue that I have.
There are many opportunities for collaboration in New York city, especially those that appeal to a certain young age-group such as mine. There are many bars, restaurants, museums, bars, clubs and so on which young people enjoy going to. The transportation system in New York is also very good and very convenient. I can take a taxi, bus, subway very easily. Unlike in Los Angeles, where people drive a lot. The transportation system in New York offers immediate and regular collaborative opportunities.
New York is very busy and populated, and can be very congested. In reflecting on my collaboration events, I realized that if I had recorded my 20 events in another place, these would have been very different than the ones I had recorded in New York. Collaborative opportunities are very available, especially with strangers. Most of my recorded events involved a degree of collaboration with strangers because people are everywhere in New York!
Collaboration plays an important role in my life. I collaborate with others every single day. I need collaboration to learn new things and get to know new people.
Recording my experience hasn’t affected my life but the act of recording the events and reflecting on them has strengthened my memories and made me think about how much time I spend with other people. Interacting with others is always easier to remember compared to remembering doing something alone. Adding my mood and feelings about my collaboration when I record the events might have added more description to an event.
Finally, revising and reflecting on the events I recorded over the time reminded me that it is important to cherish moments spent with family and friends.
