According to Chief Julian Fantino, in his article Crime Prevention: Are We Missing the Mark? he states that crime prevention is the duty of every individual and not a task to be only performed by the police as many people think. He also suggests that public education and communication are among the most effective aspects of any crime prevention strategy. Much as the community participates in crime prevention, the police still remain at the front line. However, the community must also be given the required resources to help curb crime (Fantiano, 2012). Timely initiatives must also be implemented. The fact that crime keeps changing in terms of type as well as scope is addressed. This therefore calls for acceptance of these changes as well as committed leadership in order to ensure crime is forever suppressed.
The crime prevention strategy being addressed is community policing model. This generally highlights on the need of all sectors of the community to join forces in curbing crime. It is termed more effective considering that all people in charge of responsible living of citizens give their opinions and ideas alongside the police, to ensure crime is curbed as early as possible (Community education and crime prevention 2012). The people involved here are the critical stakeholders from important sectors such as health, justice and education among others. When they are part of setting the policies, it is much easier for them to work within them, than working within those that the police set on their own.
The findings and recommendations are that for crime prevention programs to succeed, partnerships must be established among the leaders of each and every sector. This would facilitate recognition of signs of crime at very early stages, hence putting in place appropriate measures to prevent it from occurring. The police should also encourage the reporting of any suspected crimes by people of the public, so that appropriate measures can be taken.
