Politics is one of the factors that affect all aspects of life. It is worth noting that politics plays tremendous roles in correctional policy. There is a link between politics and correctional policy in the country. In relational to political activities, the correctional administration faces a lot of challenges. In most cases, politics is a crucial aspect in the entire criminal justice system. The correctional policy forms the basis of the entire correctional system, and the politics play a crucial role.
Politics plays a crucial role in correctional policy in the sense that the politicians make laws, annul laws and change laws. This means that the politics form the platform of the entire correctional policy (Benekos & Merlo, 2006). The correctional policy is built on the laws that politicians write and amend. On the same note, politics determines the leaders who take control of the correctional policy. This indicates that the politics play a role in the correctional system.
The correctional policy depends on the taxpayer’s money. Studies show that correctional systems and making of correctional policy cost the taxpayers billions of money. The government determines and pays for the correctional system and correctional policy making. On the same note, the politician undertakes the oversight role (Benekos & Merlo, 2006). The leadership in the correctional system who undertake the correctional policy making is included by politics. This phenomenon has affected the decisions made in the correctional systems.
The challenges for correctional administrators in relation to political activities are the issue of corruption. The politicians in most cases influence the decisions made in the correctional systems and leadership. Corruption drives most of the unjust activities of correctional administrators. Making of correctional policy must adhere to the rules of the politician and politics. This implies that there is no independence in making correctional policy. The politics are mostly on the top of the top and the bottom of the correctional policy making; hence, the correctional policy is not flexible.
