A shadow walks up the stairs of a dark and cold brick building. The walls reek of mold, the stairs creak with each step, and the mice are hiding from the rats. The shadow of a man reaches the third floor, and knocks on the only door in the darkest corner. His dealer answers the door; “ I need my fix man,” the man says in a raspy voice, as he’s scratching his arms; the dealer responds, “Marius I’m here to help.” Marius walks into the dealer’s apartment, a baby is sitting in a crib by the window; he sits down on the floor next to the living room table. The glass table is covered in syringes, zip lock bags filled with a powdery yellow substance, and a teaspoon. The woman says something to him but he ignores it; she is in the corner, smoking a cigarette as she wipes the dirt that Marius just dragged in off of her new stilettos. Marius sits down on the floor next to the table; his hand shakes as he reaches for a teaspoon and the zip block bags. With one push of the syringe all of his troubles seem to melt. He leans back and lies down on the floor; the baby that was in the crib is now crawling on the floor playing with whatever it can find. As Marius drifts off into lala land, he thinks of what has brought him to this point. His wife left with his two-year-old son after he lost all of their money gambling, and lied about it, and several days later his parents died in a murder suicide plotted by his brother. He had never tried heroin before, but he new that as an opioid it would take the pain away. His breathing slows down; his dealer walks over “hey! You ok? You don’t look so good” she says. Marius reaches into his pocket and pulls out his wallet, “I’m paying for 2 more hits in advance.” He throws the money onto the floor, and with that he drifts off into the darkest corners of his mind.
Loretta steps out of her Mercedes, her flowing brown hair just touches her shoulders, the stroller she is pushing has her baby girl in it. She reaches the building where she sells. This is a completely different life from what she had pictured herself doing. Loretta was a stockbroker, racking in millions of dollars on a daily basis. She was a small time drug addict, smoked marijuana regularly, but the harder drugs were only on special occasions. With the crash of the stock market, she lost everything, but what grew stronger was her drug addiction. She walks up the stairs to the apartment she sells out of; she would never let her clients go to her real home. The apartment is dark with only two windows, a dirty couch and two broken chairs surrounding the glass table in the living room. She puts the baby in the crib by the window, as someone knocks at the door. The corridor outside her apartment is dark, but through the peephole she can tell its Marius, and opens the door for him. “Next time wipe your feet on the welcome mat before coming in, this isn’t a pig sty.” She walks over and sits in the corner of the room watching Marius get high, smoking a cigarette, and contemplating if she should join Marius. As she watches his breathing slow down her baby crawls over to her, she picks her up and sits her on the couch as she prepares a hit for herself. She wouldn’t normally drown her sorrows in heroin, it’s not her drug of choice, but the latest mortgage payment on the house came in, and what she pushed this month barely covers half of it. As she is prepares to push the syringe into her vein and join Marius on his trip to lala land, the baby starts to cough, cry, and turn blue. At first she doesn’t think anything of it, until she see’s some yellow powder on the baby’s hands and the pills strewn on the floor. She starts to scream; Marius doesn’t move, he probably won’t for a few more hours. She picks up the baby runs down the stairs to her car, and drives towards the hospital.
“I’ve never been to this place before,” I look up at mom as she puts me in the stroller. It’s really dark, and there are no other babies for to play with. Mom puts me in a crib next to a window, it smells funny, and there is nothing to play with. A man enters the room and stares at me. I know it’s not daddy, but he looks nice. I’m bored in the crib, so I decide to hop out, not so easy, but I’ve done it before. As I’m crawling on the floor I find these little candies, and powdered sugar, I stick it in my mouth but it’s not as yummy as candy. I don’t feel so well, I’m going to try and get mommies attention. I start to cry. Mom picks me up and puts me on the couch next to her. She starts playing with the candy. The man on the floor looks like he’s taking a nap, maybe when he wakes up he can play with me. I don’t feel so well, and I’m having trouble breathing, I should get mommies attention, I should start coughing. I look up at mom as I’m coughing and she starts to scream. She picks me up, runs down the stairs, and puts me in my car seat before we speed off in the car. I feel like falling asleep but mommy keeps slapping my leg as she is driving saying “stay awake baby, stay awake.” Suddenly we stop, and 4 people run up to me and put me on a moving bed. They take me to a room with lots of lights, and start pocking me. I cry for mommy, but she doesn’t come into the room. People are sticking me with needles, and putting a mask on my face, and I cry for mommy more. One of the men pocking me, tells the nurse to call the police, I’m not sure what or who they are but I know mommy is scared of them. Before I fall asleep, I see two people talking to mommy, and one of them takes her away. I wonder, where is mommy, and what will happen to me?
