In his speech nominating President Obama, former President Bill Clinton had a lot to say about the economy. To begin with, he said that Obama changed the course of the collapse of the economy and “stopped the slide into depression and put us on the road to recovery.”. He also said the country works better with a strong middle class and opportunities for poor people to work their way into it. In that train of thought he went on to say “advancing equal opportunity and economic empowerment is both morally right and good economics”.
Later on in the speech he denounced the Republican proposals to cut taxes for high income Americans, get rid of financial regulations, increase defense spending and make cuts in programs to help the middle class and poor kids. . He credited Obama with creating an improved economy, although he admitted that it was still troubled. He saw the economy as improved, with 750,000 jobs created each month, banks beginning to lend and housing prices picking up. He also said he went through the same thing when he inherited the economy in 1994 and early 1995, and by 1996 had the economy roaring on its way to the “longest peacetime expansion in American history.” . But, he said “President Obama started with a much weaker economy than I did. No President - not me or any of my predecessors could have repaired all the damage in just for years.” . Then he went on to list the many policy changes that Obama made, and how they were working to improve the economy. He found fault with the Romney Plan and offered his support for Obama’s plan saying it “Cuts the debt, honors our values, and brightens the future for our children, our families and our nation.” .
