(The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine by, Michael Lewis.)
The group of people that the book focuses on shows how they sold bonds to investors that were packaged as a safe bet. It shows the great lengths they went to in order to lure in investors, although they knew in actual fact the bonds were extremely risky investments. The group were also aware that in case of a Global Financial Crisis, the government would bail them out, and thus, they could get away with trading in this way.
In a way the author shows readers that this kind of investing is like gambling in a casino, with no guarantees that the investment will pay off.
Although at first it seems that the group of workers were deliberately breaking the law, ad taking advantage of people, they did however, go to great lengths to warn people that an economic downturn was coming, and that subprime mortgages would collapse. However, the book highlights that no one really listened to them. In the end their actions were lawful, and the government bailed them out. They won, and their investors lost out, although the investors would most likely not see their actions as lawful but unlawful.
The main point of the book highlights the “casino” nature of Wall Street, and accuses Wall Street of being a den of fraudsters and deceivers. This plays into the suspicion of the American Population. Through the Big short, author Michael Lewis shows his readers another side of the industry that they have not been privy to. He takes the complicated aspects of trading and investing, and simplifies it for his readers to fully understand. He presents no heroes, in his version of events – only villains in suits who got away with taking advantage of the American people.
Supporting evidence to the nature of Wall Street’s deceptive casino nature, includes accounts of investors who’s Wall Street brokers went to great lengths to reassure them that the American housing market was practically invulnerable, when it actual fact they knew that it was not. After investigations into the collapse were complete, the American government held a small group of people accountable for the actions of many. This is the group the book focuses on.
In conclusion, the author is trying to tell us that the men responsible for the world’s finances are easily corrupted. Moreover, he highlights how faulty the system is. He tells us that the entire financial industry is fragmented and needs a complete overhaul. He explains complicated financial terms, and concepts to arm his readers with knowledge about the issue.
Michael Lewis highlights the deceptive nature of money managers on Wall Street and makes the point that most of the people responsible have gotten away with taking advantage of the American people, and that the government supported them by giving them bailouts.
The evidence Michael Lewis presents in his book is strong and comes from his own knowledge of the industry and countless interviews he conducted with Wall Street money managers, and the investors who were sold short. Michael Lewis is thorough at explaining the depths of the situation.
However, he himself has said that the accounts of the Wall Street insiders he interviewed changed, and he suspected them of lying to him at times. Because of this, the story is more an overview of events, where some of the information obtained from the insiders could be only partial truths.
However, despite these inconsistencies, and doubts the evidence Michael Lewis presents is strong enough to support the main point that he is making about the financial system as a whole. Although it seems that the author Michael Lewis is vilifying the group of traders, and almost accusing them of breaking the law, he stated that he does not see them as villains but as a mouth piece of a faulty, and corrupt system. Moreover, there is little, or no evidence to support that the men written about in the book broke the law, but it seems that they are portrayed in that way.
Despite this author Michael Lewis simply wanted to educated the public about what happened in the Global Financial Crisis of 2008. He wrote the book to show and what is still happening on Wall Street, and in the financial system as a whole.
