U.S. Federal Tax Status (profit or nonprofit)
Having experienced a cut in funding, the hospital opted for incorporation as a nonprofit organization. the aim was to ensure that it could secure funding independently to help continue offering its services to the community. In effect the “federal, state, and local partnerships have provided CDB with funding and in-kind support” (Centromedsa, n.d.)
Annual Report Financials
The annual financial expenses of the year 2014/2015 stood at $3,648,246, the revenue on the other hand stood at $3,757,183. A great deal of the financing was from donations and grants. A staggering 81% ($3,047,740) was received through grants and donations (Annual Reports, 2015).
CentroMed Walzem Clinic origin
El Centro del Barrio (CDB), is an entity that began doing business as CentroMed back in the year 1971. It in the initial stages it operated as a counseling program for adolescents and children. The aim of creating the program was to facilitate the increase in the size of the Mexican American workforce to provide culturally competent services. CDB thus was created as an arm of the Our Lady of the Lake University which was being funded by the Mexican-American Mental Health Education Project (About us, n.d.).
However, over time there was the realization that an innumerable number of clients of the CDB had undiagnosed medical conditions. There was an evident and clear shortage of affordable, geographically accessible and culturally-competent health care. This then created the need for primary care services, thus prompting the opening of the first clinic in the 1979. Subsequent expansion and upgrades were made owing to the ever increasing demand from the community (About us, n.d.).
