The Industrial Revolution is defined as the sudden burst of industrial activity that emerged first in England, eventually spreading throughout Europe, America and other parts of the world. However, this sudden spurt of industrial activity was a result of a long-term development caused by combination of factors. Although the Industrial Revolution happened around two centuries ago, the evolution of lifestyle beginning from the Middle Ages proves to be significant in the development of the Industrial Revolution.
Many centuries ago, the manorial system dominated the face of England. In this system, the lords owned a large area of land with serfs and slaves working on the manor’s three great open fields. The serfs and slaves cultivate the land and harvest crops for the consumption of the manor’s owner, while the lords take care and provide for the needs of the serfs and their families. However, the rise of capitalism transformed this manorial system into one of the greatest factors that eventually led to the Industrial Revolution.
Within the next centuries, the manorial system transformed into land-for-profit system where the lands are enclosed and being worked by a few serfs and slaves for production of crops and other agricultural products such as wool and meat. Five known factors led to this transformation: (1) expansion of market, (2) increasing population, (3) government intervention on market, (4) agricultural innovations and (5) agricultural innovations led to an increase in the demands for certain products such as crops, wool and meat. Thus, many lands were transformed into private and enclosed lands used mainly for agriculture and pastures. Eventually, this focused production would give rise to factories and machineries that would later establish a trend paving way for the Industrial Revolution. Thus, to say that the Industrial Revolution began much, much earlier is true.
