Donovan’s charge is a play based on real life events of one New Yorker. A city employee, who also happens to work as life guard, counselor as he recalls the events in which he fights off an attacker and administer CPR until the arrival of the police. The drama series continues with the survivor finding himself on Rikers’s island, facing murder charges.
Fences is a play divided into two acts. The first act is comprised four scenes and the second act is made of five scenes. The play begins on a typical Friday, Bruno and Troy’s payday. The duo goes to Troy’s house for the usual ritual of engaging in drinking spree and chatting. The play is set around the context of struggle with the black community to get opportunities. Despite the dawn of new opportunities created by a tragic character in the play who paves way for other black players to achieve more the opportunities are under conditions that they do not and should never feel free to experience and never reap from your success or talents themselves.
The two plays are similar in a way that they represent the struggle to survive in a world where opportunity or freedom does not come easy. In the play Donovan’s Charge, we learn about how the proponent is faced with criminal charges despite the fact the he was the one being assault. The issue of race is evident as a misogynist ideology propagate by his accuser. The same is quite evident in the play fences in which the black are considered lesser people and hence do not and are not entitled to the privileges other people were enjoying.
The character Cox, Glen Cox who in the play recounts the dreadful events as a dream, the character remembers how event as overlapped, places and people coincided to create a landscape of a life that was task with the burden to reveal its truth the only truth that no one believed. He recounts the events of his trial how he ended up being framed for murder his incarceration and eventual release. He is the character that wears the prison green suit.
In the play fences the character Cory Maxson compares closely to Cox in the Donovan’s charge. Maxson is the teenage son of Troy and Rose Maxson. He is a senior in high school, he is a brilliant kid who scores good grades and is often on college recruiters rosters. The college recruiters are coming to see him play his favorite game, football. He comes out as a respectful son and a compassionate nephew to his uncle Gabriel, who suffers minor physical challenges. He has demonstrated talent and ambition to realize his goals and dreams.
The two characters from Donovan’s Charge and Fences share similar attributes those of being compassionate and generally good people. The two characters share qualities of trying their best despite the challenges that they face. Cox in the play Donovan’s Charge is a man of various talents and is poised to success before the unfortunate events of that fateful day. Maxson on the other hand is portrayed as being hardworking and ready to make sacrifices to achieve his hearts desires.
In both play the climax of the scene is when this great and peaceful people are faced with criminal charges and denied opportunities to make their cases right. It epitomizes the issues of racial segregation and discrimination. Maxson is refused to play football despite his extraordinary talents. While Cox in the Donovan’s charge is denied freedom and incarcerated for life for offence he did not commit.
In the play Fences Troy Maxson, is the main protagonist. He is a fifty-three-year-old African American man and works for the city’s sanitation department loading garbage into trucks. Troy is considered as a tragic hero with excessive pride for his role as the head of the family and being the sole breadwinner. He often fails to show affection and compassion for his loved ones and especially those that mean the most in his life. He does not treat his son well or show empathy for him despite his challenges and sacrifices. This can be related to the play Donovan’s Charge when Pop, James Cox the boy’s grandfather shows strong emotional reactions of outrage. He however suppresses the rage but at times it is expressed through the belt known in the play as the medicine man. In both plays there is evident conflict between parents and sons when parents feel threatened by their son’s success and utter hard work.
In both plays the theme of racial discrimination is quite openly exposed. The play fence for instance is set in the 1950s. During that time some considerable progress had been made in the debate on race. However, America as whole had a long way to go. All the characters in the play were African Americans. Troy despite begin a great baseball player is denied the chance to play professional baseball for the reason he is black. In the play Donovan’s charge, Cox is charged of murder mainly because he is black and his attackers are not blamed for attacking him or even considered as attackers.
