Conflicts do exist in all organizations due to most of their goals are unable to coexist in all the stakeholders involved in a particular association. The same applies to criminal justice organizations where conflicts are inevitable; this is mainly attributed to the fact that those participating in the process of handling various criminal activities may have different conflicting methods of executing their mandates (Stojkovic, Kalinich & Klofas, 2012). However, conflicts play a vital role in criminal justice organization in that it enables it to come up with effective mechanisms to cope with the conflicts. Such strategies deemed to be the most valuable are typically arrived at after lengthy consultations and deliberations by the two conflicting sides.
In the case study, some of the most evident conflicts among the fifteen municipalities, who agreed to create a multi-jurisdictional drug unit, were how the unit would be budgeted, organized and supervised. To ensure that the newly formed unit became successful in its mandate of combating crystal meth drug, the conflicts that had surfaced during the early stages of its establishment should have been addressed appropriately. Some of the ways that could have been used to manage the dispute include understanding the cause of the conflict, in our case study; the origin of the conflict was dominance in control of the unit by bigger municipalities. Secondly, the cities should have come up with a system specifically designated to look into and addressed the conflicts that had risen in the formation of the unit (Stojkovic, Kalinich & Klofas, 2012). The stakeholders involved should have created a team that would collect information and come up with recommendations on the best ways to manage the conflict.
Moreover, the mandate of supervising the unit should have been delegated to the federal government so as to avoid creating a scenario whereby the municipalities struggle to have control of the unit leading to conflicts among larger and smaller municipalities. Conclusively, the unit should have existed due to its significant role in reducing crime rates by ensuring that proliferation, production, and distribution of crystal meth drug was combated.
