How do you perceive the problem of domestic terrorism in the United States? Do you think militias pose a growing threat? What solutions can you suggest?
Domestic terrorism in United States is the unlawful use of force or violence by an individual or a group of people based completely and entirely within United States without any foreign involvement. There are certain specific social and political issues that have lead to domestic terrorism in this country.
United States is a country where you would find people belonging to different cultures, different religions, different racial groups and they all have different political ideologies. All these differences have existed since the beginning and they would continue to persist all across the nation. Unfortunately, these differences have given rise to violent and aggressive behavior among individuals belonging to different ideologies and groups. The events of domestic terrorism which have been perpetrated either by individuals belonging to different racial groups or have been linked to political issues have caused significant concern and given rise to an alarming situation for the US government.
Domestic terrorism has caused a major dilemma in United States since the past four decades. It can be seen that a large, complex and diverse society as United States can also be affected by extreme actions taken by individuals or group of individuals who belong to a certain belief system. The law enforcement community has to bear immense challenges in order to understand the terrorist trends and the general pattern posed by domestic extremists. There is an urgent need of restrictive policies and imposing punishments in order to tackle with domestic terrorism.
While talking about militias as a growing threat to United States, it can be said that militias is certainly not something new for US. The initial formation of militias was influenced by historical paramilitary movements in order to protect and liberalize governed people. Militias can be found throughout the United States and according to the recent figures they are growing in number rapidly. Militias claim that they are fighting against cruel use of power exercised by oppressive government. But according to US government increasing number of militias means increase in right wing anti government extremist activity.
According to militias, US government is an unlawful and evil federal government and in order to make things right they need to take law in their own hands. Militias have always remained involved in anti-government policies and they have protested against government policies. But not all militias are violent in nature, in fact majority of the groups are non-violent and only a small number of militias are actually responsible for violent acts. They can engage in a range of anti-government protests including advocating overthrowing of federal government. The actual motive of militias is to achieve their political goals by committing such violent acts. The FBI has classified militia groups into four main categories depending on what sort of criminal activities they get engaged in. some of them are moderate groups that don’t get involved in criminal activities rather they protest against government in order to achieve their political stability. On the other hand there are radical groups who get involved in domestic terrorism and other acts of violence.
I would suggest that in order to tackle the growing problem of domestic terrorism and increase number of militia operations, United States needs to revise law and security policies and should mainly focus on radical elements that can cause violence against, government, civilians or other targets. There is a dire need of restrictive policies and severe punishments against those who commit extreme acts. Militias and domestic violence needs to be completely abolished from United States and in order to do so it is required to take certain measures that would make sure such activities do not persist for longer. There is a huge gap between individuals and groups belonging to different culture, religion, race and political ideologies. These differences need to be highlighted and steps should be taken to eliminate differences among such groups. This would greatly help United States to reach a state of peace and violent acts could be minimized at the same time.
