Introduction
Science is a system that is governed by exploring nature where data comes through observation, experiments and peer verification. On the basis of the evidence produced from the data collected, theories advance to account for the observed content. In this regard, Science is characterized by nature as individuals have spent their time making sense of their surroundings. In this regard, the experience of science can explicitly be explained by the process of learning that takes place through inquiry and observation. In other words, this mode of learning must be incorporated into the classrooms to deliver the actual content of science. On the other hand, Life Sciences, which is the focus of this paper, involves the study of living organisms encompassing the molecular level along with their interactions with the environment.
Life Sciences:
Rationale:
Aims:
- Introduce models and then apply these to predict observations and results.
- Strengthening the concept of change in order to understand the natural and the physical systems.
Goals:
- Engaging in debates and discussions will help individuals look at the same issue from a number of directions.
- Constructive thinking pattern would be focuses in the class by giving group tasks and case studies having no right or wrong answers.
- Concept maps, reflective journals and other modes of assessment will help develop conflict resolving ability amongst students.
- No demarcation would be made amongst highest and lowest achievers. In this way, everyone would be treated equally where students will not compete for marks but would rather focus on growing and strengthening their understanding
- Each group member will be encouraged to contribute equally.
- Previous incomplete knowledge will now have a structure and format based on fact and evidence, making them ready for the challenge of more knowledge at academic and career level.
Mid-Level Science Curriculum
Suggested Time outline: Each of the three topics mentioned above will take a period of one week to complete (inclusive of lab activities, trips, evaluation and assessments).
