Selected Scene: “Disney Brave” is a story about a princess named as Merida, she was a brave girl who has expertise and skills in archery. The Scottish kingdom of DunBroch was the princess kingdom, and she was living with her mother, father and 3 triplet brothers. The scene I have selected is after ten years have gone her mother Elinor wanted her 16 years old daughter Merida to become a ladylike princess and act as royal children does as she has born as part of the royal family. Also, she should carry all the kingdom qualities in her to govern the state. Merida was a child who feels that she deserve a freedom and wanted to live her life according to the way she wants to live without any restriction and given full rights of freedom.
The climax was when Merida came to know that she is going to present herself in front of the Lords of Macintosh, Dingwall and MacGuffin sons who were coming in castle to marry Merida. After listening this, Merida became upset, and she told her parents that she has not yet prepared for marriage and wanted to live her life freely for some time. Later when an argument gets over Merida has provided a challenge for all sons of Lord i.e. Archery. However, the son of Dingwall has won accidentally, after seeing this Merida decides to shoot all 3 targets on her own in spite of her mother Elinor’s objection Merida hit the targets. This argument has led to a fight between both mother and daughter.
After a big fight and seeing her mother aggression towards her, Merida left the castle and runaway through Jungle, there she found blue fairies moving around. By following these beautiful blue fairies, Merida found an old-hut that came in front of her after entering she saw a witch and ask her to provide a spell that could change her fate and especially change her mother. The witch gives her spell in a form of a muffin cake and told her to give the muffin bite to her mother. By hearing this, Merida became happy and flew back towards her castle and told her mother that she made a muffin for her mother Elinor. Listening this Elinor became happy and taken a bite of muffin and after eating the cake she turned into a bear. By seeing this Merida got scared and cried by telling her mother that she just wanted to change Elinor behavior towards her and want her mother to be as a mom, not like a queen.
After, Merida’s mother has become a bear because of spell and her life is in danger as everyone would want to kill her by thinking her as a real bear including Merida’s father who suddenly smells a bear in the castle. They run away from the castle. However, Merida finds out a solution to break a spell. She used that a spell breaker and her mother become human again from bear. By seeing that Elinor is back, Merida’s father became excited and hug her wife and a whole family including three sons. This lead to a powerful message of mother daughter relationship by making a strong and closer node of bonding made through love.
Discussion and Conclusion: Brave is the story of a strong relationship of love between mother and daughter. This scene is selected and highlighted because how brave Merida and her mother Elinor was even after facing the reaction of spell. By looking at her mother becoming a bear due to a spell, but Merida efforts to make her mom turned human again that has showed a true of mother and daughter. In spite of Elinor becoming a bear she still have the same feeling of love for her daughter the way she used to have as human. As, she wanted her daughter Merida to realize that her mother loves her a lot, no matter what restriction she puts that is her duty and responsibility to trained her daughter according to the royal etiquettes. However, the courage of Merida is appreciating that is even facing a harsh reality of spell on her mother, she didn’t lose hope and work hard on her own to make her mother back to normal in which she succeeded.
Furthermore, the theme of the story about Scottish princess Merida and her bravery was completely portrayed nicely in this story. The struggle she made and act of maturity is one of her discipline that makes her a true fairytale princess. A beautiful story of a mother love and a theme to portray this love was incredible and made this comic story a memorable one for all the story lovers including parents, children and youngsters.
The important characters that we can spotlight are Merida the daughter and princess along with her mother Elinor, the queen of Scottish Kingdom. However, evil act was played by the witch character who provided a spell that turned Elinor into a bear. But, Merida efforts to make her mom back to normal was a brave motivating factor and gives a message that never lose hope. Also, it gives an example of never underestimate the power of parent’s love for their children as their children are closer to their hearts no matter how harsh they act or behave as parents.
