Incidents of terror attacks implicating Islamic radicals who are United States citizens has been on the increase in the past years. United States citizens have also participated in some well organized international terrorism activities like the 2008 terrorist attacks which occurred in Mumbai, India. These terrorists are homegrown and I do care whether any terrorist attack is masterminded by these homegrown terrorists or not. This is because any terror attack, by domestic, international or homegrown terrorists has got negative impacts on the victimized society. This paper is therefore committed to highlight the reasons as to why I care more about the attacks mounted by terrorists at the restaurant where I work as a supervisor.
Terrorism in a resort where I am a supervisor has continuously led to loss of life and property. Employees survived had both minor and major injuries. Some were rushed to different hospitals for medical attention. Loss of life impacts negatively both at the family level and at the national level. This is because the majority of those who succumbed to the bombing were economically productive. It is a big loss to the dependants of those died in the resort bombing and at the same time a loss to the United States’ government for losing economically productive members of the society. This resort bombing definitely had a negative effect to the families of the victims and to the United States at large and this makes me care if the attack was plotted by homegrown, international or domestic terrorists because effects will still remain painful and economically retrogressive.
A part from human and property cost, the United States tourism industry suffered undoubtedly in the time of this attack. The number of tourists seeking for the services of our resort decreased considerably. The resort bomb attack had revealed a pronounced decline in the number of tourists jetting in. This is because potential tourists are afraid that a similar attack may happen again not only in the resort by even anywhere in the country. This has seen the resort making unpredictable losses. These losses are attributed to the homegrown terrorist attack of our resort.
Psychosocial trauma left by the bomb attack on its victims is still a big ill-effect of the terrorist attack on the resort. A number of people got maimed both physically and mentally. Some victims as a result of the bombing are disabled at the moment they are unable to fend for themselves. This is a psychological torture since before the bombing these disabled individuals were independent both in their social and economic life. Family members or friends taking care of these victims also suffer mentally due to abrupt nursing of these victims. The dependence burden posed by these resort bombing victims is another trauma experienced by their families.
The economic effect of terrorism can be valued from a variety of viewpoints. There are instant costs to property and immediate effects on general productivity. Terror activities as well have a long term indirect negative costs of countering terrorism. It is difficult to measure the direct effect of terrorism on business. The immediate result of bombing of a resort, however, was closing down of the resort itself and at the same closing all the major roads leading to the resort to allow emergency vehicles to move around quicker. This unavoidably gave rise economic interruption in short run since the business activities of the resort came to a standstill. This makes me care about any terrorist attack even if is home-grown, domestic or international terrorist. Its impacts are negative and detrimental to the society.
