Abstract
Dreams are usually unavoidable and they occur in series of succession when an individual is asleep. In case of wet dream, the person experiences thoughts and emotions that are enough to cause ejaculation and nocturnal emissions of vaginal fluids. During the dream, visions and symbols that have got images of erotic sexual scenes can also be apparent and these are enough to cause nocturnal emissions. Freud and Jungian established that these erotic dreams are common at puberty when the individual has enough sexual experiences to worry throughout the night. Thus the unconscious mind find ways of fulfilling its desires through dreams that leads to orgasms. These dreams can be pleasant or unpleasant, but whichever way they lead to sexual pleasure that is enough to cause orgasm in both sexes, particularly during the adolescent, but not limited to adulthood (Kai-Ching, 2011).
Dream can be voluntary and involuntary, when one is awake or asleep. Individuals can indulge in reveries and day dreams when awake, or they may see involuntary vision. However, when people talk of dreams it is usually associated with night or day happenings through an individual mind when asleep. During this time, a succession of emotions, thoughts, and images passes through the persons mind during different stages of the persons sleep. The content and the reason why people dream is not known though scientists and religious people have tried to understand the purpose of dream throughout history.
Studies by Carolyn (2000) revealed that the content of the dreams are almost similar across the globe and people mostly dream of their personal experiences and thoughts. People experience visions and dreams that are a reflective of their experience and memories. Usually the vision is exaggerated with varied bizarre memories and experiences which are highly phantasmagoric. During the dream, the dreamer engages in varied forms of emotions including, abandonment, anger, happiness, joy and fear. In fact negative emotions are more common in the dreams than the positive emotions. However, the leading emotion in dreams is the anxiety. Sexual dreams have been estimated to occur in dreams constituting nearly 10% of the whole dream. Additional studies have proved that 8% of the female and male dreams are full of sexual content which usually lead to nocturnal emissions and wet dreams. In fact in young to mid teens, the most prevalent dreams are full of sexual themes and mostly lead to wet dreams. Additionally, these teens experience recurrent dreams where the sexual themes are recurrent and it is experienced in different stages through the sleep.
According to Wood and Boyd (2010), Freudian, a celebrated psychotherapist believed that a dream is motivated by an individual’s unconscious desires which he also referred to as unconscious wish fulfillments. Thus according to Freud, dreams are the royal road to the unconscious. This implied that, according to Freud a person’s dream content is influenced by the individual’s unconscious desires. In addition, Freud noted that the individual’s unconscious wish fulfillments are driven by memories and experiences that the person acquired during the early childhood. Additionally, Freud theorized that dreams are made up of two parts, the latent and the manifest content. The latent content is what he believed that motivates the fantasies and the unconscious wishes which a person withdraws fulfillments from. Whereas, Freud believed that the manifest content is not important and has got no meaning to the dreamer. He also established that during the dream, a person develops manifest content which masks the latent content. Most of the Freudian early works hinted that people’s dreams are full of sexual contents particularly the young to mid teens. He further noted that these dreams that the young and mid teens engaged in were motivated by their experiences and unconscious wishful desires. In fact it is during these times that Freud identified majority of the dreamer’s latent dream as being driven and motivated by sexual desires. Thus, according to him, people’s latent dream was full of latent dreams which are sexual in nature. However, in his subsequent studies, Freud shied away from his earlier findings that latent dream is full of sexual content, though he still insisted that for children; the dream is mainly composed of sexual imaginations, thoughts, emotions and visions.
Jungian was a student of Freud and he differed with most of his teachers theories. However, he expanded on the Freud’s theory of dream being motivated by a person’s unconscious wish fulfillments. He argued that the dreams have got important messages to the dreamer which the dreamer must pay attention to. He also noted that people can experience recurrent dreams like the case in sexual dreams which are experienced frequently by the young to mid teens. According to him, the dreamer must pay attention to these dreams because they occur when a person neglects issues that are related to the dream. In fact further researches by others have revealed that during the time that the young to the mid teen start experiencing the sexual related dreams, they are developing sexual knowledge and learning more on sexual issues. Indeed Jungian believed that a person’s dream is mainly constituted by the memories that are formed by individual throughout the day. Therefore, if the dreams that are sexual in nature are the ones that the young and mid teens frequently experience, it implies that throughout the day, they are involved in memories which are motivated towards sexual desires and sexual activities. He also noted that the person will dream because when the ego is at rest and these issues are not solved yet, the unconscious mind takes to task to deal with them. Therefore, the unconscious mind of the young and the mid teens re-enacts the past glimpses of the past sexual desires and form emotions, images and thoughts which motivate a person to derive the sexual pleasures through day wet dreams and nocturnal emissions (Wood and Boyd, 2010).
After phallic stage children development enters another stage known as the latency period. During this time there are relatively calm sexual desires and disruptions for the children through puberty. In fact this is the time that children prefer being with their same sex members as they don’t see need of the opposite sex members. Freud father noted from Latency to puberty, the young moves to genital stage which is marked by progress from puberty on. In addition he established that during this stage, the adolescents are quite motivated with the desire to fulfill their sexual pleasures. Thus to meet their pleasures they associate with the people of different sex. In fact this the time that heterosexuality is great among the young and it is this time that the sexual attraction between adults emerges. Thus, his belief that those who fail to reach the adolescents stage without fixation will easily go through work and love life (Wood and Boyd, 2010).
Therefore by age sixteen, adolescents have learnt much about sexuality and they are really experienced in this field. At this stage the males have known and have experiences about erection, ejaculation and sexual orgasm. In fact this is the stage that most of the males masturbate to derive the sexual pleasure. On the other hand, females at this age have known about vaginal flow and the way they can derive pleasure by rubbing in between the vagina. They have got enough experience about sexuality and masturbation that they sometimes practice it. During this time, the adolescents learn different ways of deriving the pleasure and they extend it to sleep. During their sleep, they wet dream. And as noted by Freud, during the dream, a person fulfills the desires of the unconscious mind because ego had enough experiences but they were not satisfied. Thus as the adolescents sleep, they fulfill their sexual desires through wet dreams. Researchers have also revealed that it is not only the young and the adolescents who wet dream but also the grown. The reason behind sexual images and symbols and visions that creates wet dream is the desire to fulfill the unconscious mind. Jungian noted that dreams reveal what somebody experiences throughout the day or during the week. Thus adolescent’s males and females wet dreaming during this time is just a way they are trying to fulfill their sexual pleasures. It is a way that unconscious mind is propelling the experiences and the daily undertakings that were not completed during the day. Thus to meet sexual pleasures that were not satisfied during the day, the adolescents males and females wet dream thereby reaching orgasm and ejaculates in case of the males and release vaginal fluids in case of the women.
A study of the different sexual behaviors that are experienced by adolescents revealed that a good number, nearly 15% masturbates consistently. They derive their sexual pleasure through masturbation; however they are very afraid to share their acts and source of sexual pleasure with the adults. During this time, the adolescents also engage in partnered sexual experience where one rubs the others organ and in so doing they derive sexual pleasure. Studies also indicated that the adolescents who reach orgasm through wet dreams are motivated by the erotic dreams they go through. As they sleep, the adolescents see erotic scenes which motivate them to ejaculate and in the process they reach orgasms. The females release nocturnal emissions when they are motivated by the material formation which are exposed to during the dream in fact many people in the dreams sees sexual images which are so erotic and satisfying enough to cause ejaculation and release of the vaginal fluids. A study on the rate and frequency of the sexual dreams amongst males revealed that nearly 94.8% adolescents had dreamt having sex with a woman regardless of the type of the sexual interaction as narrated in the dream. Of this number, 82.8% agreed that they had dreamt of sexual intercourse with a woman and during the dream they had ejaculated and reached orgasm in the process. During the dreams, 87.9% reported having dreamt of the sexual activity with adolescent girls whereas the rest reported having dreamt of having the intercourse with the older women. In the dreams, the most rated activity that motivated erection was reported as the fore play which included kissing lips followed by vaginal intercourse and anal and oral intercourse. All these, apart from kissing were reported to be enough to cause erection and ejaculation and they are shown in the graph below (Wood and Boyd, 2010).
Frequency of Sexual Intercourse
According to Carolyn (2000), during the process of ejaculation, men and women reported that once they dreamt of being in erotic scenes they ejaculated and released vaginal fluids, which made them to experience the orgasm state. In addition to these dreams involving women, 40% of the adolescents reported having dreamt dreams where sexual activity was motivated by objects. They also reported reaching orgasm when the sexual activity is motivated by objects, however the rate at which they reached the orgasm was not as high as when women is involved for males. The third type of nocturnal emissions was revealed to be cause by dreams that the individuals weren’t aware of. Most of the dreams reported to results to the ejaculation were joyful and were very fulfilling. However, others were not joyful and the dreamers didn’t want to think and to talk about them. As revealed in the studies, some dreams though they may not be erotic but they also lead to ejaculation and release of vaginal fluids. Thus even the unpleasant dreams were noted to be cause of the semen release and vaginal fluids release. All these dreams were found to fit into Freud’s theory and view of dreams and wet dreams. For instance, some adolescents dreamt of having sex with their mothers and these fall into the Oedipus theory. Whereas other dreams fell into the theory that they are motivated by the need to fulfill the unconscious mind desires.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the symbols, images and succession of emotions and thoughts that people go through are enough to cause ejaculation and vaginal fluid release. These dreams are usually erotic and they are mostly enjoyable to the dreamers. Sometimes they can be unpleasant but still they can cause ejaculation and lead to orgasm. The dreamer as explained by the Freud’s theory is usually trying to fulfill the desires of the unconscious mind. Thus, the wet dreams are normally common at the age of 16 onwards when individuals are in puberty stage with enough sexual experiences and desires to cause lost of concern. This is because Jungian theorized that a person dreams of only things that matters as per the time of dream.
