Science has been considered one of the most interesting and intriguing subjects during one’s primary grades (K-6). The wealth of new knowledge was just immense and replete with visual representations and instructional resources that enhance the students’ learning on a widely encompassing subject matter about life, in general. Honestly, the ability of the science teacher to effectively motivate the students to learn contribute either positively or negatively to the enthusiasm in science. One actually remembers one specific grade where the science teacher was simply applying an instructional approach based primarily on lecture and reliance to the reference book. At that time, science proved to be immensely boring, flat, and uninteresting. When information is fed to students, without enticing interaction, participation and the need to explore, any subject for that matter, becomes a task to contend with. Another science teacher was highly remembered for using creative and innovative strategies; ranging from using audio-visual materials, interactive classroom activities, group presentations, and field trips to actually explore flora and fauna or animal kingdoms, as needed. At that time, science was regarded the best subject in one’s primary education.
An instructor could therefore generate excitement about science in the classroom setting through the use of visual resources, actual live or real specimens of living things that are to be explored, and ensuring interactive, participative and collaborative inputs from the students. As such, since science is a wide field of study where students learn from observation, experimentation or through being apprised on historical, current, and future trends; the topics, activities or assignments that could be used or modified to generate enthusiasm for science in one’s future classroom would include events that are current and where students could immediately relate. Also, the students would be more interested in being able to apply what they have learned in concepts and theories to contemporary settings. These topics could include current global phenomena such as climate change and global warming; extinction of animals; controversial diseases; changes in geographical facets; or even latest updates and findings about space. Instructional approach and resources should also be updated to include technological applications through the internet, experiencing how it is to look through the scientific instruments (telescope, microscope), and being involved through a wide array of experimentation and exploration of the world, as suggested by the learners.
