The educational process consists of someone (child or adult) being taught knowledge or a skill on various subjects using various media (e.g., lectures, books, Internet, tapes). The information is provided; reinforced through a series of activities, exercises, or demonstrations; reviewed and clarified; and then it’s tested to ensure that the knowledge was gained, competency achieved, or skill mastered. This traditional approach to human development has been used by the academic community for decades. Yet, when reviewing the research, there have been some revolutionary insights and changes in the understanding of education as a link to human development. First is the understanding of how psychology relates to pedagogy. Second is that education makes culture possible. And third is the new concept of what there’s to know, learn, and understand as it relates to human development. Therefore, the field of education is experiencing an unfolding as it strives to meet changing and challenging demands of society.
I believe education is an important and powerful vehicle for human development, which is why I am applying for graduate school to increase my knowledge and contribute to miracles being unfold through academia. Having earned a Bachelor’s degree from King Abdul-Aziz University located in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and successfully gained skills while employed in the corporate market, I have now discovered my true passion: education and human development.
At your prestigious university, I will obtain advance knowledge from the great philosophers (e.g., John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Freud, Erik Erikson), along with Mahbub ul Haq, who published the first Human Development Report commissioned by the United Nations United Development Programme. While diving into a rich curriculum on the concept of capabilities central to the human development approach—what individuals can do and what they can become— I too will become a student in a new miracle unfolding.
California Lutheran University offers a diverse, scholarly community and is known for its excellent liberal arts and professional studies program. The MPPA (Master of Public Policy and Administration) curriculum prepares graduate students for leadership in a global society, and designed to meet demanding needs in public, private, and non-profit sectors.
My career goal at this point in life is to obtain a management leadership position in education that allows me to contribute to the human development journey of others. I am an articulate, highly motivated, self-starter with extensive problem solving abilities. I am determined, dedicated, and driven to realize my goal; and provided the opportunity, I will rise to meet all academic challenges. Being bilingual (i.e., Arabic, American English) provides added-value to future employers, since relating to cross-cultural and multicultural individuals is an asset in our global environment. As shown in the letters of reference, I always accept full ownership and responsibility for actions, issues, and assignments using effective time management and critical thinking skills. When given the opportunity, I will achieve my professional career goal and become a graduate student that California Lutheran University can be proud of. All that is requested is a chance to unfold as I enter this journey.
