The role of the teacher and other caregivers is essential in assisting toddlers and infants build and maintain emotional and social foundation. Emotional and social development entail a toddler and infant’s growing capability to express and regulate emotions, explore new areas or environments, and the ability to create close relations with teachers and other individuals such as caregivers. There are different ways in which teachers can support social and emotional development of this young group of individuals. This is done bearing in mind that development impacts on all areas of growth. Teachers should learn to understand and respond to cues and messages of infants. They can also establish a friendly learning environment and establish activities such as games to allow infants develop better social and emotional values. This helps in developing social and emotional skills that enhance better development.
A number of curriculum models exist for infants and toddlers. Two of these curriculum models include curriculum with corresponding evaluation tools and curriculum that individualize for all toddlers and allow for activities and give advice that can be applied in the development of the planning of daily activity. The first curriculum is better as it covers all aspects of growth and development including children’s functional skills in six major domains (gross motor, fine motor, adaptive, social communication, cognitive, and social development).
Social forces might interfere with a child’s social and emotional development. Two essential factors that influence this are lack of emotional support to the child or lack of conducive environments for the child either at home or school. These forces impact negatively on families and children. To address these issues, there is a need to introduce a forum between teachers and parents to set up with ways to assist the infants and toddlers where needed.
Documentation of infants’ learning experiences and other school activities is essential in determining the progress of growth and development for infants. It is, therefore, essential for all caregivers to keep appropriate documentation in order to determine areas of improvement for children, as well as, areas that children require more assistance.
There are a number of meaningful elements in the subjects of attachment and emotional development, curriculum models, and/or play documentation. To narrow down the meaningful elements, I have learnt that the aspects in question are essential in infants’ social and emotional development. I have also learnt that it is essential for caregivers to be more focused on elements that promote the development of children.
