Being a father’s is an enormous task that required complete dedication and observation regarding one's children. In the essay, “An Indian Father's Plea” the author adopts the persona of an Indian father explaining to a teacher that his son, Wind-Wolf is not a slow learner but simply has a different background from the other children.
In the essay, the father informs the teacher that his child is not an empty glass that is delivered to them for filling. Rather, he is a full basket that comes into their (different) society and environment with special knowledge, culture and background to share. The significance of the statement lies in the fact that the teachers are demonstrated to treat the son as a slow or weak learner. The sons seeming “slowness” however is explained by the fact that he has had a different outdoor and culture-specific training that might lead to such presumptions being made. For example, the son might suggest there are 13 months in a year as his culture holds despite the fact that he is competent at counting.
It is painfully obvious that the author targeted the educational system and the society in general in this essay. He attempts to explain why although the Indian child might seem like a slow learner it is just because has a different background as compared to most of his age mates. The son, is familiar with arithmetic as his learnt it as a part of his cultural training, and yet this might not be adequate in the school. The author also chastises the society for discriminating his son, a mere child to the extent of diminishing his self-confidence. The son eventually forced him to abandon his culture by shaving and calling the practices weird.
The essay is an enjoyable read pointing out some flaw that might be associated with our thinking and judging of situations based superficial observations. As such we should strive to ensure that the rash categorization of Indian students as “slow-learners” without due regards to the circumstances.
