The TV show Bones revolves around forensic scientists that work with the FBI to solve crimes. As a result, there is often violence and aggression on the show, as there is at least one murder every week. In one episode, called The Sense in the Sacrifice, the violence comes from a serial killer that has been on the show several times before. Christopher Pelant has killed at least eight people in the show. The FBI investigation team use a cadaver to frame Pelant, which is violent in itself. Later, Pelant tries to manipulate the lead character, Bones, into leaving her boyfriend for him, at which point Bones also threatens violence by pulling a gun on Pelant.
The context of Pelant’s violence is that he is obsessed with Bones, and is threatening more violence if she gets married. He is male, mid-30s, and identifies as Caucasian. He is culturally American. The context of Bones’ violence is that she is seeking to protect both herself and Pelant from her boyfriend, Booth. She wants to protect herself for her own safety, but she wants to protect Pelant because he might provide useful information for the cases she is working on. She is also white and mid-30ths, and has no strong affiliation with any culture apart from being American and atheist.
There are a number of reasons why violence is included in Bones. The first is that it is a crime drama, which means that there must be some violence in order for the team to have murder cases to work on. Without this violence, the premise of the show would not work. Most of the time, the violence is not shown in any explicit way, but in some cases there are recreations and investigations by the team that show the violence. These are shown to help the audience understand how the crime occurred and the reasons behind it.
Another reason why violence is included in the show is so that the audience are aware of the causes of these murders, rather than simply understanding that they exist. The violence here provides context for the actions of the perpetrator. In many cases, the violence is done in an extreme way that shocks the audience, which is why it is so difficult for Bones and her team to work things out – they are shocking because they are unlikely but gruesome.
Another reason why violence is included in the show is that, when the violence is committed by the season regulars, it helps to highlight that there is a difference between “good” violence, and “bad” violence. One of the main characters, Booth, used to be a sniper, and is often seen struggling to deal with his past. He has killed people, but it is in the same of the law and protecting the country. He works as an FBI agent to help atone for his past, but in this episode (and others) the audience is expected to understand why he has acted aggressively.
Violence in the media can desensitize people. As with Bones, if people are repeatedly exposed to images of violence and death then they become used to it – they become more interested in solving the crime than the emotions of the people that are dealing with it. It can also desensitize people as it is portrayed in shows like Bones as being something routine that happens often. This could lead people to believe that acts of aggression and violence are normal and just, which makes them desensitized to it because they assume it is more common than it is.
