It has to be reckoned that the Puritan Dilemma was one of the major religious issues that overshadowed the 17th century English society. The Puritans living in the country went on to face the dilemma that made them think of a viable way in which the Church of England could be saved. They were undecided about sticking by the system and endeavoring to reform the things needs from within. The people also pondered about the viability of separating themselves from the Church of England so as to be able to escape from the various acts of corruption and sins that went on to encompass the religious domain in the 17th century England. In a society that was immensely driven by religion, this Puritan’s Dilemma came to be the burning issue on the religious front during that time. With time, more and more Puritans started to face this dilemma.
A small group of Puritans went on to separate themselves from the Church of England. These people wished to be away from the corruption that had come to encompass the Church. In their opinion, the best possible way to purify religion was to start the church all over again sans the negatives that had come to ignite their skepticism in the first place. The people who separated from the Church of England came to be known as the separatists. On the other hand, a large number of Puritans still remained in England hoping to fight the system and purify the corruption that had come to show its effect already. In spite of the adverse situation, these people answered to their “calling” and tried to remain true to their faith in God and religion. Hence, it can be comprehended that their dilemma finally let them remain true to their Puritan calling as they decided to remain on the path of ethics, morality and good way of life in the long run in spite of all the odds that came in their way during the 17th century.
Intriguingly, the Puritans went on to migrate to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the 1630s. Now, it has to be noted that the Puritans were motivated by a number of reasons to migrate to this new ambiance away from their motherland. When King Charles Stuart I took over the throne of England, the Puritans still staying in the country came to comprehend that the new king had no tolerance for them or even the Parliament as he followed monarchical absolutism. Secondly, the king even went to the extent of torturing the Puritans, he himself being soft on the Catholics due to his wife’s religious faith. Thirdly, the dissolution of the Parliament under the regime of the same king came as a huge blow to the Puritans of England. They now came to understand that the socio-religious ambiance of the country was fast turning into an antagonistic one for the people of the Puritan belief as the king continued his support for the Catholics of the land.
The Puritans were thus shaken by the signs of the impending doom with the country being challenged by ills like poverty, plagues, droughts and catapulting unemployment. Thus, fourthly, these Puritans came to believe that England was facing the wrath of God for all the corruption and wrongdoings that had been carried out in the country in those times. All of these reasons initiated the migration of the Puritans to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the 1630s where they hoped to find a new life in New England keeping their belief in religion and God as it had always been sans any impediments from the authority of the land.
