Holden Caulfield is obsessed with being on top of the society. He states that when he see little children playing on the cliff alone with no one big except him, he will just come down and be a catcher in the rye. Killing a person and spending the rest of your life in prison is absurdity. Chapman was not indoctrinated. He was solely senseless, a loony. Lennon had earlier on handed chapman a signed copy of his biography. He after committing the crime, chapman does not escape from the crime scene but stays there reading the autobiography. Additionally, he does not remember calling Lennon’s name before shooting him yet he did it. However, his lust for money must have motivated him to commit the crime. He might have accepted to commit the crime in exchange for many. It is common for such criminals to be financed by a few tycoons who have specific selfish interests in a person’s existence. If Lennon was not killed, he would have been a major obstacle to Reagan’s administration.
Holden Caulfield, the chief character in The Catcher in the Rye. He is resentful of the adult world. He repulses any phony qualities. He is irritated by any kind of hypocrisy. He is out to live a life that is desirable. Additionally, he wanted his life to be a real example of how a youth adults should live. The kind of cynicism that exists in the society makes him want to live an isolated life. For instance, during his date with Sally Hayes, he expresses his desire to run away with her since he felt that the prevailing society full of crimes and hypocrisy could not contain them. Although, he fails in class and calls himself dumb, he portrays intelligence in his well-articulated narrations.
Unlike Chapman who lived a life that expressed the realities in the society, Holden fantasizes a utopian community where justice, harmony, fairness and equity will prevail. He will never attain that vision of a world where kids do not reach the "phoniness" of maturity. As the story progress, he concedes that children must grow up and move on despite the many challenges. Chapman’s life could as well have resembled that of Holden were it not for the influence that the community had on chapman. Their lives are completely different. Chapman claims that only a small portion of him is the devil meaning that he could not control his desires to perform crimes, and this ultimately devastated his life.
