The article talks about the how National Council of Justice of Brazil has ruled that “notary publics” in Brazil must perform marriages between individuals of the same sex. This is after the legalization of same-sex marriages in Brazil, the largest Latin American country, following the legalization of same-sex marriage by two of Brazil’s neighbors, Argentina and Uruguay. Brazil however, is still largely divided on this issue with several prominent political figures being very vocal about their anti-gay marriage stance. This article is helpful because it highlights developments on gender issues and human rights in Brazil, one of the largest countries in the world both in land area and economic capabilities. It would be very interesting to see how Brazil evolves given the legalization of gay-marriages in the country.

This article talks about how Protestant churches are allowing same-sex marriages and how the philosophy of the church and its followers are slowly evolving. The article follows the story of Jack Kemp who started the “Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays at Duluth’s Pilgrim Congregational Church”. For about two decades, he has been the pastor of the church and was the first pastor to allow a lesbian minister into service. The article discusses the warm reception of the church faithful to same-sex marriages. This article shows us how same-sex marriages are being received in Protestant communities, indicating a changing perspective towards same-sex marriages.

This article discusses how the current governor of Minnesota, Governor Mark Dayton had given the right for same sex marriages by signing a decree that does so. Minnesota thus becomes the 12th state of the United States to allow same-sex marriages. The law will take effect by August of this year and was welcomed by thousands of supports of same-sex marriages. This article is very helpful because it shows same-sex marriage acceptance in the United States. It looks like the same-sex marriage is gaining momentum. This is a very interesting article because the state of Minnesota is primarily ruled by the Democrat Party. It would be more interesting to find out if other Democrat Party-ruled states follow.

This article provides survey results on the changing views on same-sex marriage by residents of the state of Virginia. The article points out that public sentiment has increasingly becoming more favourable to same-sex marriages. The article also highlights how the new public opinion is very different from the stand the public took in 2006 on the same issue. This article is very helpful in that it shows sentiments of the population quantifiably, which could be utilized for coming up with research questions that would provide more insights to the socio-economic impact of same sex marriages.
