My name is and I was born on the 23rd of December, 1988 in Keelung, Taiwan. My parents were and . I have one older brother who works as a firefighter for the FDNY. He also was part of EMT (FDNY) for 3 years. My family immigrated to the United States in 1994. Our only support here was my uncle . He is the only one from our family who speaks English. We moved to the United States because my parents wanted me and my brother to have a good education and have a better job. It was really hard for my parents because they did not know English.
However, my family traveled back to Taiwan twice. We were not used to the living conditions here and all our friends and family members were in Taiwan. I had troubles with adapting and learning English. Every time my mom brought me to school I was afraid and nervous of meeting new people and seeing different faces. After few weeks of school, I slowly got used to it.
During my early childhood my mother did not work because she had to take care of me, my brother, and my cousin. My dad was not with us in the States but was still working in Taiwan as chef to make some income. My father was not around until I got 8 years old. Later on, my mother found a job at a clothing factory as a sewer. My father worked as a chef his whole life.
During my high school years I started to make friends. We liked to hang out at the park just to play handball. It was the only hobby that I truly enjoyed. From time to time, there were NYPD officers that were checking if anyone was doing anything illegal. They spoke to me to see if I had seen any suspicious activity that had happened in the area. They looked as really nice people that tried to keep the park safe. It should be said that from there on I started thinking about becoming a police officer.
Then, I went to Nassau Community College. Regretfully, it was not the best time of my life. I got into trouble because of hanging around with people that I hardly knew. I was caught up with someone else’s beef at the time where I had nothing to lose or to gain. I was with a group of people who barged into a bar in Flushing, Queens and did not know what was going to happen. I saw people throwing punches at each other and I saw the other group throwing punches back at us. That is why I decided to act, so I laid punches back to back up a friend. I was 18 years old and did not have much experience. It was just a spur of the moment just to join someone else's beef. I feel sorry for everything that happened and for the individual and as well as for my parents and these are not just words. It was a very poor judgment. I did not carry any weapon. This just is not me at all. I did not even know most of the people that I was with at that time beside four people. Nonetheless, my lawyer turned my life around. I cooperated with the attorney to first identify the apprehended individuals that I knew that were on tape.
For the past ten years, I had had a fresh start to prove that I was not a criminal person. I joined the US Army and was sent to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri for basic training at Transportation School. During my basic training as a Platoon Guide holder, the drill sergeant wanted to give me a waiver for promotion from E-1 to E-2. Since I was E-3 at the time when I enlisted I had to meet the prequalification for the army standard physical fitness standards. From E-2 to E-3 I referred a friend to join the army as well. During my Advanced Individual Training, I excelled beyond Army Physical Fitness score of 344 and was in a position of a squad leader. I was awarded a Physical Fitness Badge and Certificate for Achievement. I was asked again for a waiver for promotion to the next level. At the same time, I still did not have time in service to get promoted. Luckily they gave me the option if I wanted to go the Fort Benning, Georgia for Airborne School which I accepted. After graduation, I was in a station in Fort Bragg, NC with the 82nd Airborne Division.
The army disciplined and changed me as a person. Because of it I gained experience that I never had. I had met great comrades, units, and leaderships. I do not know what I would do without army. Without exaggeration, it was my guidance and my savior.
After leaving Active Duty my main goal was to take the NYPD exam. I really wanted to serve my country and to protect people even though I might be put in harm's way. My mother was worried about me while I was in the military and I believe that my father worried also but did not really show it as much. However, I knew that this is what I wanted to do. I also enrolled back in school as a full-time student at Queens College with the major of accounting during 2013. I graduated with the degree in accounting last year. I worked part time as a self-employed with the TLC, Army Reserve, and intern at a Certified Public Accountant firm in Flushing, Queens.
Currently, I am serving in the Army Reserves as a Sergeant at Fort Totten, Queens. I am a Fitness instructor and I run the entire program for the unit that I am in. I will continue to excel myself for a higher position and hopefully, one day I will have an opportunity to work for the NYPD.
