During this course, I have learnt how to read and analyze different books, how to read between the lines. All the essays written during the course are important to me as each of them was a challenge. Writing my essays, I have learnt a lot of things, such as how to interpret literature, how to understand the author’s message and hints, and, of course, how to express my thoughts and emotions on the paper. I think that most of all I like my Kindred essay. I believe it happened not only because I deeply analyzed it and fully understand the author’s ideas, but also due to the fact that I chose and developed the theme of the essay by myself. That is why, most of all I am proud of my Kindred essay.
Nevertheless, considering all my essays, I believe that “The theme of slavery in Kindred” is one of the strongest ones. While writing this essay I have learnt a lot of new things. Thus, I learnt how to define the main theme of the story as well as the main message that the author wants to deliver. I am also proud of this essay most of all, as I myself have chosen the theme I would like to discuss and the main points I would like to mention. Thus, while reading I identified that the main theme of the novel is slavery. That is why I decided to develop this exact theme in my essay. First of all, I read the background of this problem. Then, while reading, I paid attention to the passages in which the theme was discussed and made various notes. In this essay I tried to look at the theme of slavery from different angles. For instance, the way the protagonist, Dana, perceived this notion at the beginning and at the end of the story, the way other characters looked at the problem. While doing it, I believe that I have learnt how to distinguish the most important parts of the story, how to evaluate them and to mention in the paper. In my opinion, Kindred essay is the strongest one as I managed to reveal the protagonist’s development throughout the story. I believe that I managed to answer one of the main questions of the story, which is why Dana was constantly returning to the past. Furthermore, I would like to mention that the novel Kindred helped me to pay attention not only to the facts that lay on the surface but also to details. I also believe that the strong point of my essay is the fact that I used a lot of examples from the story and analyzed each of them. I suppose that in this case even the people who haven’t read the story will understand it and its main purpose. Moreover, all the arguments that I used in the story are supported by evidences (examples from the story) which also makes this essay credible. While writing this essay I tried not to make the same mistakes that I did in my previous ones and to use all the skills I have learnt during the course. That is why I am proud of my Kindred essay most of all.
Furthermore, I would like to mention that all the written essays were very useful to me as while writing them I have learnt a lot about how to analyze literature. Thus, I started to read books more thoroughly paying attention to details and hints provided by the author. I have learnt how to read between the lines and how to become more attentive. Moreover, I believe that I taught myself to identify the main theme of the story and to develop it. I also learnt how to express my point of view and how to support my thoughts by evidences. Writing every other essay I tried not to make the same mistakes that I did in my previous ones. Due to this course I understood that literature is something more than simply an entertainment. It always has some message, some points that each reader should identify. It may develop such skills as logic, memory, attention, concentration and others. Indeed, all these skills may be applied to real life.
