A colony is a group of emigrants who leave their country to go settle in a far away territory but remain subject to their parent country. It can also be defined as an area or a territory that is controlled by a distant country or people far away from it. Colonies were apart of life of the British and Americans in the 17th and 18th centuries. The main purpose of colonies was to increase the wealth of the central government and their government’s economic power.
Colonial life is the everyday play and work of the emigrants who have gone to settle in a certain country/territory. Life in British colonial America was very hard and complicated for the emigrants. First of all, it was very hard for them to adapt to their new lands as they had different religious and cultural backgrounds as they came from different countries. Moreover, the British colonies made it hard for them by passing laws which made them slaves for life especially the blacks. Initially, there were white and black slaves but things turned around as slave trade began of trafficking Africans to the British American colonies to work as slaves. The Blacks were forced to take jobs in plantations due to the increasing demand of labor in the plantations and were treated similarly to animals than human beings. Also, the British colonies made their lives difficult by denying them their rights and freedom and those who defied were hanged in public. The British American colonies only used them for economic gain and did not care of their well being.
Colonial life was very difficult as people were forced to live simple lives without any freedom of expression. Many emigrants were not allowed to practice their cultural and religious practices and they were undermined if they tried to. They were forced to do what the British colonies demanded from them. Most blacks were considered as slaves who are to be sold at any time and used and were not considered as beings but as property or possessions. British colonial America made life very hectic for the settlers who settled in their colonies and used them for economic gain.
