Addictive behavior towards the usage of mobile phones has been exhibited among teenagers across the globe. A majority of them have given cell phones priority more than anything else including education. This has therefore led to an assumption that cell phone addiction has adversely affected them in regard to their education. Cell phones may have improved communication but its addiction has proven to affect the growth and development of teenagers.
Cell Phone Addiction and its Effects on Teenage Education
There has been a great deal of technological advancements in the recent past which of course has impacted human life in a big way. One of these is the innovation of cell phones. Despite its usefulness, excessive usage of it may be harmful more so among teenagers. To confirm that teenagers are addicts of cell phones, it is good to look at their behavior when it goes missing or when the battery runs out (Choliz 2010). The addiction, especially chatting via texts is far reaching as many aspects of their lives get affected.
According to (Neal 2008), youngsters always want to fit into their groups of association thereby wanting to remain interconnected around the clock. This makes them even want to be responding to text messages all the time therefore chatting with their peers all through. This means that there will be lack of concentration in studies as much of the time will be spent connecting with buddies (Peele 2007). Even if one was in the middle of a lesson, it will be difficult to concentrate as much focus and attention will be geared towards the unfinished conversations.
Much time is always dedicated to chatting even deep into the night. Some even wake up very early just to continue from where they stopped the previous night. This means that they will not get enough sleep and adequate rest (Piotrowski 2010). This will lead to them be fatigued all throughout the day. The tiredness in this case will make these teenagers fail to concentrate in their studies. If this is done repeatedly over a long period of time then the effects are far reaching.
When much of the time is spent texting each other and exchanging mails, then it is evident that there is literally no time for homework. If the homework is to be done, it won’t be done well because they never concentrated in class (Kavoori & Arceneaux 2006). This will lead to poor grades and their lives negatively affected in the long run. Cell phone addiction among the youth is therefore not healthy and should be prevented at all costs.
