Personal and professional accountability
According to Nancy D. and Solomon, M.A.2010, Accountability is becoming frequent word in all industries today. In order to meet the accountability standards a person should have the following attributes:
Personal growth which includes acquiring the necessary education and skills
advancement, continuous learning, career plans, and one annual asses himself and have action plans
There should be strong ethical behaviors and practices that include good practice that support the nursing principles and areas of practices. An individual should also be familiar with professional associations and involvements. These include memberships and involvements in sufficient professional associations which facilitate the networking and specialized developments
Certification is also one of the requirements to meet the personal and professional accountability. One must have certification in an appropriate field of specialty.
Career planning
Nowadays, and even more than ever, many people are accountable for developing their own careers. Whether one is just starting, or he/she have many years of experience, the following would a person in advancing his career in any discipline.
Knowing his/her role. One should understand his/her current job descriptions and requirements then compare them to those of the current levels of practice
Knowing the future plans. This require planning where one want to go in his/her career direction and what he/she needs in order to be there; his major question should be: what are the requirements, for example, of health care in the years to come and where will I fit?
Positioning one self. In the development of a career plans that provide good directions for you, while providing flexibility and capability to adapt to future situations and ability to beat competition and secure oneself a good position. These skills assist in developing the individual strengths.
Nursing leadership concern with critical thinking, advocacy as well as action. This occurs in every role and domains of practices are nurses. In this case, nursing leadership takes on personal journey disciplines. Therefore, these skills are very vital for developing the personal strengths of a manager or a leader in an organization. These skills assist in developing the individual strengths of a leader. For example, shared leadership or otherwise known as the management skills is very important for nurse leadership. These comprises of the skills in , as well as knowledge in councils management and administration. This is because it effectively promotes the shared leadership among the team players. Action learning is also another fundamental skill that comprises of utilization of action planning methods and tools. This is to solve problems and individually reflects on various decisions that requires immediate actions. Reflective practice is another personal skill and comprises of active practice of leadership behavior. It also includes knowledge, as well as reflection of personal behaviors as a leader. In behaviors /tenants, reflective practice reference there is the use of a set of guidelines, as well as tenants that assist reflective performances. This can be individual generated or otherwise be based on key models generated by others. In this case, they are developed by the Nursing Leadership Center that give an example of some guidelines/tenants, which can be utilized as a tool to direct personal manifestation of personal leadership behaviors. For instance, holding the truth, that is the existence of integrity as a fundamental value of leadership. There is also appreciation of ambiguity in an organization. This concerns learning to work comfortably in the uncertainty of the environments. The diversity as a medium to wholeness give another example of reflective practice. In this case, this implies approval of variety in all its types. This includes race, religion, gender, generational, the rebellious voice, sexual orientation, and discrepancies of all kinds. Similarly, there is holding multiple views without judgment. This implies making and holding a room so that multiple views are entertained prior to rendering of decisions. Another reflective practice is the quest for exploration towards knowing. This is the act of creating a constant condition of learning for the personality, and an organization. Other reflective practices include understanding something of life, and nurturing the rational as well as emotional self.
Accountability means that I am willing to take individual responsibilities for various intended outcomes that i will do all I can to ensure that my roles are up, my bottom line is performing, my employer or employees are happy, my values have been expressed by the manner i carry out my duties and that my client for example patients are well served (Donaldson L .2001).
One personal goal that is important for leadership growth is discovering of potentiality of an individual. This entails the ability to look for prospective in an individual and in others. This can be achieved through working as team and discovering others people traits.
