The aim of this essay is to present you with an experience which has contributed to my growing mature and realizing my aging. There are lots of events and incidents in life along with people who one meets that play a major role in one’s evolution of personality. The experience I have chosen to describe is my relationship with my first boss at my first job as a college student. It is an experience which opened up the path in front of me and made me realize that life ought to be taken seriously if one wishes to enjoy a good quality of it.
My first boss was forty-fiveat the age of 45in his mid-forties and had a grocery store. He had advertisedput an advertisementput on an advertisement for part time employees and it was in our first interview over the phone that he hired me. This was the first shock for me. I was pretty young and still unsuspicious of life’s misfortunes and bad choices, but still I had been told more than once by my parents that there were specific choices which ought to be made under lots of thought. So, it was a great surprise to me to see that someone trusted me with a post in his business without even looking at me.
But it soon all became clear to me. Mr. Finley was not the right person to be a boss. He had no control over his employees. [comma splice] , hHe always seemed as if his mind was somewhere else, and he trusted his employees with too many responsibilities. Soon after my first day there, I was given the keys to the store and I was asked to open it the two following mornings due to his heavy schedule, as he said. I was in great trouble, but then again, I did not want to lose this job which paid for my everyday expenses. I did open the store, and two other colleagues showed up to work, but our boss and his right hand, Ben, did not show up. The same went on the following day. I had started to worry. What was I supposed to do with the keys to the store? What was I supposed to do with the money in the cashier?
The answer came a lot sooner than expected. A police car stopped outside the store just before lunch and two policemen came in asking for Mr. Finley. In short, I explained to them the situation showing my ID card. They took me to the station to testify where I gave them the keys to the store. The story was that Mr. Finley used his grocery store as a frontwindow shop for smuggling.
This experience taught me that I should never compromise with less than what is necessary for my safety. I should have asked for some credentials before I accepted that job. Life is too short no to be taken seriously when it comes to our dignity and safety.
Julien,
Much, much better. A good choice for a story and fairly well written.
