When deciding to adopt a pet, a person usually needs to consider his or her preferences, as well as the possible changes in the lifestyle. While many people know whether they like cats or dogs more and are, thus, guided by this factor in their decision, there are also those, who do not have a preference, and this is the time when such people need to consider cons and pros of owning one or another. Although both cats and dogs are both the most popular choices among other pets, they differ greatly in their attitude toward the owners, their habits, as well as their ability to adapt to different living conditions.
It is not a wonder that there are cat people and dog people, as one usually adopts a pet to have a companion and someone to take care of. However, dogs and cats need very different amount of attention from their owner. Dogs are usually much more affectionate and inclined toward showing love to people in general and their owner in particular. In general more emotional, they are usually very happy to see their owners, and in case of misbehavior, dogs often express guilt. Although cats can be very affectionate to their owners too, they are mostly known for being a lot less emotional than dogs, very independent from their owners and needing more private space than a dog. For this reason, a person should assess his or her need for emotional response when making a decision.
Being very energetic and sleeping a lot less than cats, most dogs need to exercise very often, which is why it is necessary that the owner walks the dog every day or every other day depending on its size and age. Many dogs may need to be walked several times a day, which many affect the owner’s schedule and habits. On the other hand, cats are usually very lazy and are seen sleeping most of the day. They do not need a person to exercise, so the owner can buy toys, and the cat will entertain itself without interaction with the owner. Moreover, the cats are usually trained to use a litter box, so the owner does not need to worry that his or her absence will affect the pet’s well-being. This factor plays an important role, as it may be very hard to alter own habits to meet the pet’s demands.
When deciding to adopt a cat or a dog, a person needs to check if his or property is big enough for the animal. While little dogs may not need much space, medium and big dogs can suffer in the apartments, especially if the latter are small. For this reason, it is advisable to own a house, if a person wants to adopt a medium to big dog, thus, allowing the animal to have more space by the possibility to go outside any time, especially if the house is small. To the contrary, cats do not need that much space and can easily live in the apartment without experiencing lack of space to run and exercise.
Both cats and dogs can fill life with joy and love, but they are have some crucial differences, such as the emotional capability, needs to exercise and spend time outdoors and the amount of space they require to feel good. Thus, the future owner needs to assess his or her ability to provide the mutually joyful life to the future pet. For this reason, it is important to understand the level of emotional response one needs from the pet, the amount of time one can dedicate to it and the space one can provide to the animal for a comfortable life.
